Panorama - Crete

Crete, the largest island of Greece
Municipality of Arkalochori

The traditional and picturesque village of Panorama belongs to the district of Heraklion - the capital of Crete (the largest of the Greek islands (8300 km2) and one of the most popular summer resorts).

The name of village is used for the first time in the Venetian census of 1577 and 1583 and from that time onwards in all known official recordings of villages of Crete. The current name of Panorama is claimed by the really splendid view that this place provides. The name was changed in 1951 and the previous one was Gournia. The history of the village is lost somewhere in past times.

Apart from vinicultural products, the area produces cereals, olive oil, fruit, vegetables, livestock etc. Beautiful are two big rocks (rizimia & harakia) south-west of the village from where springs a tributary of Anapodiaris, Nispitas. The spectacle is imposing and the enormous rocks impress as they stand alone in a wide opening, reminding enormous pyramids

Mediterranean kiwi. I am sure you did. This post is dedicated to my dearest friend Yiannis Kokinos from this village, whom I met in USA in early 90's and we keep in touch since then.

Natassa.
