Cannes, France

The elegant city
By Phivos Nicolaides

Cannes is an elegant city known world wide which attracts people from around the world. The name «Cannes» may derive from the word «canna» (reed). Canua was probably the site of a small port, and later a Roman outpost on Le Suquet hill. Le Suquet housed an 11th-century tower which overlooked swamps where the city now stands. Most of the ancient activity, especially protection, was on the Lérin Islands and the history of Cannes is the history of the islands.
One gets to the top of the city by climbing the Mont Chevalier up to Suquet. The panorama at the top with the whole city below surrounded by the blue sea and the Lérins Islands is breath-taking. Ste Marguerite and Ste Honorat islands are accessible by boat in 20 minutes.
All along the Quai St Pierre in the old port one can find fishing boats and pleasure boats side by side. The fishermen work on their nets next to their colorful barks. On the pier Albert Edouard the most beautiful yachts in the world come to moor.

This fabulous city is the second most popular convention town in France. The well known «Cannes Film Festival» (le Festival de Cannes), founded in 1946, one of the world's oldest, most influential and prestigious film festivals alongside Venice and Berlin is held here, as well as, the MIDEM (congress of record producers), concerts of classical music, dance and theater. There are even four casinos.

The places of interest in Cannes are: the city on high (Haute ville), the old port, the rue Meynadier, the Palace of festivals and the C Haute Ville and some of the most popular Cannes activities and attractions include: Plage de la Croisette, Promenade de la Croisette, Iles de Lerins, Musee de la Castre, the old town of Cannes, Ile St. Honorat, the Carlton, and Notre Dame de Bon Voyage.

The Croisette also known as «Boulevard de la Croisette», full of shops, boutiques nightclubs, restaurants and cafes, and scenic (private) beaches, is one of the most famous promenades in the world.
Cannes enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate year around. The beaches, promenades, boutiques, nightclubs, and restaurants are at their peak during summer time. Alex enjoying his cruise.
Α scenic drive to Grasse, the capital of the French perfume industry. Between Cannes and the city of Grasse there is a healthy local rivalry (Cannes consider themselves superior).

Through a river canyon a fascinating tour to the French riviera.

In the heart of the Cote d'Azur, Europe's most beautiful bay (Marina Bay des Anges) opens onto the Mediterranean.
The 16th century town of St-Paul-de-Vence one of the most picturesque towns with its stone houses and narrow walkways amid vineyards and flower blossoms.

The picturesque town of St-Paul-de-Vence.

Modern figures at the entrance of the walled old city.

Strolling in the narrow streets of the historic mediaeval walled town.
The tour guide Sanz Anne-Laure was experienced, highly informative and very helpful.

The charming Sophie playing with her cute Labrador dog-Whity in he castle.

How life was in those times...

and how is today... exploring the wonderful shops, art galleries and boutiques.
The gallery «Ensemble pour les Orphelins» owned by the artist Marie-Pierre Alarcon-Courreges in front of her excellent pieces of work.
The Atelier a Deux, displaying beautiful paintings and creations owned by Danielle Alarcon Dalvin.

Leaving the absolutely magnificent castle a musician singing good bye .
The old Fragonard Perfume Factory began operating in 1926. Gradually, this small family owned business unit became an international concern.

The guide Ms Murielle explained to us fully the procedure for the manufacturing.

The attractive factory shop was staffed with young attractive, enthusiastic girls (like Aira Lipska from Latvia) who encourage us to sample the different perfumes. We all found that the temptation to buy form such charming assistants was irresistible! The high quality of the product and the presentation ensures that the lingering memory is recalled.

@ JamanFou.
