Knossos Palace, Crete, Greece

The ancient city of Knossos and the imposing Minoan Palace is located 5 kilometres southeast of Heraklion, in a beautiful valley next to the river. The site was carefully selected for its natural advantages (water supplies, access to the sea and proximity to a large fertile forest).

One of the more remarkable discoveries at Knossos was the extensive murals that decorated the plastered walls. It is the largest of the preserved Minoan palatial centres.

The site itself includes the Palace of Knossos, the Minoan Houses, the Little Palace, the Royal Villa, the villa "Dionysos" with famous Roman mosaics, the south Royal Temple - Tomb and the Caravanserai.

Excavations showed that the first settlement in the Knossos area was established during the Neolithic times (6000 BC).

The majestic first Palace of Knossos was built around 2000 BC and was destroyed in 1700 BC by an earthquake. It was rebuilt and destroyed again in 1350 BC.

A new Palace was built, severely damaged from one hundred years latter.

An extensive reconstruction and restorations took place.

Its final decline came during the Middle Ages where it was diminished to an unimportant small village.

Knossos was the seat of the legendary King Minos and the main centre of power in Crete.

Κnossos survived through the historical times as a great city - state until the first Byzantine times.
The palace contained well-stocked magazines, royal apartments, shrines, a throne room, and service areas.

The colorful paintings portray a society which was non-militaristic oriented.

Homer mentions the great city of Knossos in the Odyssey.

The Palace of Knossos is the monumental symbol of Minoan civilisation, due to its construction, use of luxury materials, architectural plan, advanced building techniques and impressive size.

Because by legend King Minos ruled this city, the civilization is thus termed Minoan.

The centre piece of the palace was the so-called Throne Room.

The pine trees inside the archaeological site were planted by Arthur Evans.

The palace has been associated with the myth of the Labyrinth.

Other parts of this extremely large palace include spacious apartments with running water in terra-cotta pipes, flush toilets, long halls with storerooms containing huge ceramic jars used to store grain, a huge amphitheatre with tiers of stone steps seating 200, and religious shrines.

Prinsesamusang. According to the mythical legend, Minataur was in the Labyrinth and was killed by Thiseas! So, when you visit Knossos, don't ask for him. You'll be safe!! :)

@ Sarah Sofia Ganborg. Interesting culture and a unique civilazation.
