Montserrat, Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona Montserrat a spectacular beauty
Snapshots by Phivos Nicolaides

Catalonia's most important religious retreat is Montserrat.

The massive conglomerate stone monolith is ideally located to play an important role in the cultural and spiritual life of Catalonia.

According to Catholic tradition, the statue of the Black Virgin of Montserrat was carved by St. Luke around 50 AD and brought to Spain. It was later hidden from the Moors in a cave (Santa Cova, the Holy Grotto), where it was rediscovered in 880 AD.

According to the legend of the discovery, which was first recorded in the 13th century, the statue was discovered by shepherds. (Picture: The impressive interior of the basilica).

Due to the great numbers of pilgrims that flocked to Montserrat throughout the Middle Ages, the monastery was enlarged from its original humble size.

The grand basilica of Montserrat was consecrated in 1592.

The basilica also holds one of the monastery's most noted attractions, the 50-member Escolanía, one of the oldest and most renowned boys' choirs in Europe, dating from the 13th century.

The Basilica, next to the monastery, is home to the revered La Moreneta, or Black Virgin.

Not only is Montserrat Monastery of significant religious importance but the natural beauty surrounding the monastery is simply breathtaking.

In 1881, Montserrat's Black Madonna was crowned in accordance with Canon Law and proclaimed patron saint of Catalonia.

Experience magnificent views of some of the most unusual rock formations in the whole of Catalonia.

The statue of the Virgin, known in Spanish as La Moreneta, is a small Romanesque statue made of wood. It depicts a seated Black Virgin with the child Jesus on her lap. Her dark color is due to changes in the varnish with the passage of time.

Barcelona Montserrat is a spectacularly beautiful.

Millions of visitors evey year from all over the world visit Montserrat .

The Monastery of Montserrat, located near the top of the 4,000-foot mountain, is home to about 80 monks.

Amazing views of the Catalonian countryside.

Home to one of the most popular pilgrimage destinations in Spain: the Shrine of Our Lady of Montserrat.

The mountain was declared a national park in 1989 and is a popular spot for hiking and rock climbing.

Offering breathtaking views across the plain all the way to Barcelona and the sea.

For many visitors a trip to Barcelona Montserrat Spain is the highlight of their visit.

Great photo report Phivos! You covered every corner of beautiful Montserrat. I love the views. When you get there early in the morning and take a look at the valley. Hmm it's incredible. I think the rocks, those incredible figures on the neighboring mountain walls, give the place a charming atmosphere. By the way, I notice you also capture a certain sensual aspect that adds up to the series. I see that in many of your posts. I like it because it is more about a subtle hedonistic side of the city than just plain stuff. Great posts :)
