Wine Festival, Limassol, Cyprus

Lemesos (Limassol) the motherland of vine and wine

The cultivation of the vine in Cyprus is as ancient as the roots of the people of Cyprus. The cultivation of the vine in Lemesos (Limassol) is also as ancient as the Kingdom of Amathus and Curium many centuries B.C. It is a well known fact, confirmed by various historical references, that wine has been produced in Cyprus for over 4,000 years until now.
The Limassol (Lemesos) Wine Festival is about more than just the juice of the vine. Around harvest time the city fills a two-week programme with cultural events loosely linked to the glorious theme of wine.

Cyprus’s wine capital Lemesos lives up to its reputation as a party town with a wine festival (28th August – 6th September 2009) that it hosts every year. Held at the Municipal Gardens, just across from the coastal promenade, in late August, early September, this event has been a regular fixture since it was first launched in 1961.

The Wine Festival began as a tribute to the island’s long winemaking tradition, growing in size and variety over the years.

From left, Mr. Efthyboulos Efthyvoulou, Richie Corvello (USA), Mr. Nicos Nicolaides, Minister of Communications and Works and Mr. Andreas Hadjipanayis.

Richie, Andrea and Efthyvoulos having fun.

Inspired by the ancient festivals dedicated to the God of Wine Dionysos and the Goddess of Beauty and Love Aphrodite, it combines fun and merrymaking with ample wine and food and a variety of performances from local and international artistic groups.

The Limassol Folk Club presents folk dances and songs from home and abroad.
The Wine Festival was first launched in 1961...

We all toasted "Nastrovie" with gorgeous Juliana from Russia.

Making new friends. Juliana form Russia enjoying the Cyprus wine.

There are wine-themed songs by singers and choirs and the Municipality Philharmonic Orchestra performs at different locations throughout the festival.
Richie Corvello knowing which wine to choose...

There are concerts, satirical reviews, comedy and magic shows.

Addressed to permanent residents as well as foreign guests, the Wine Festival offers an opportunity to sample different local wines from large and small wineries, and traditional Cypriot food.

About 15,000 visitors attend the festival each year.
Nuts for everybody.

Richie loves nuts!

In 1987 the International Office of the Vine and Wine (O.I.V.) made a suggestion to declare Lemesos (Limassol) as the "City of Vine and Wine". The same year on October 31, during the General Assembly of the International Office of the Vine and Wine, which took place at Marino in Italy, Lemesos (Limassol) was declared as the "City of Vine and Wine" and was warded a medal and diploma.
