Annaberg, Germany

Christmas in Annaberg-Buchholz
Snapshots by Phivos Nicolaides

Annaberg-Buchholz is a small town with a population of 23,000 inhabitants in the mountain range of the Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains) in the southern part of Saxony in former East Germany.

Annaberg is situated in the Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains), a hilly region in the Free State of Saxony, close to the border of the Czech Republic.

The town was formed in 1945 by the union of Annaberg and Buchholz, both of which were founded as a silver-mining settlement.

After silver was discovered in the area of Erzgebirge, people gradually moved to the region and Annaberg was founed in 1496.

Today, there is no mining anymore in Annaberg. The only mine which is still open is part of the Museum "ErzgebiRgMuseum".
The "Museum of Ore Mountain History" opened its gates for the first time in 1887.
Since 1989, the German reunification, Annaberg has undergone a considerable amount of changes.

The facades of most of the houses have been renewed, museums opened and old buildings were rebuilt.
Stella and Popi enjoying the Christmas spirit of the town.
Tha famous church of St. Annen, built between 1499-1525 from the local stone material Gneiss, is the largest hall-church in Saxony. The church holds valuable art treasures.
One of the highlights is to listen to the sound of the recently restored Walcker-organ from 1884 with more than 4000 pipes and 65 stops.

Another beautiful church in the same street with St. Annen.

Frohau is the famous technical monument in Saxony -the Frohau Hammer Mill from 1657- a UNESCO site.

The town attracts tourists for its rich old traditions and past history.

Attractive merdhant houses and the baroque Town Hall surround the Square with a monument in the centre.

Today, Annaberg-Buchholz is a vivid and modern town connected with its traditions and customs.
The Annaberg Christmas market is considered as on of the most beautiful in the Ore Mountains and in Germany.

The traditional "Pyramide anschieben" on the Friday before the 1st Sunday in Advent from 5 pm marks the beginning.

At the market place, there is a Pyramid with unique carvings relating to the town's history.

A traditional Erzgebirge Christmas lasts until "Hochneujahr" (i.e.: 6th January).

Stella, Popi and Georgia exploring the Christmas Market opportunities...

Traditional customs are alive and well at the Christmas market in the old squarter of the town.

Stella looking pleased at a traditional stall, buying gifts.

Traditional food and glogg is sold in small wooden huts set up around a huge Christmas tree.

The elegant Greek restaurant "Akropolis" nearby the old square.

The Christmas market usually starts four weeks before Christmas Eve.

The picturesque Christmas market with the beautiful decoration attracts all the ages.

The town is famous for its charm during the Christmas season.

The Pyramide, the traditional Christmas decoration, can be seen in the picture.

Despite the cold weather people strolling around.

A dog lover in the corner of a shop.

Every year, the town is bathed in the glow of the giant Christmas tree and the traditional Christmas pyramid in the Christmas market.

Enjoying the magical and serene atmosphere.

On top of the door there is the Schhwibbogen which can be seen almost in every window during Christmas time.

Exploring the shop windows...

Popi couldn't resist buying something from Annaberg...

Cute Eleni looks so happy with the sweets!
Visiting a big local bakery.

You gave us a fine, fine tour! I love the large mustard-colored building on the corner that has rounded corner windows. It is fantastic. That is quite a steep hill in the town and I am impressed that people look fit and ready to climb and walk all around to shop and enjoy the decorations. It appears (in the shop where Popi was looking at clothes) that the merchant has organized the clothes by color coordination...all purple and neutral where Popi was standing. Is that common? Or perhaps done just to attract tourists at this busy time....
