Manchester city has a population of around 500,000, while the larger conurbation, called Greater Manchester, has around 3,000,000 inhabitants. Manchester is an important city in English history and culture playing a key role in the industrial revolution in the nineteenth century. The city has left behind its industrial past.

Today, the city of Manchester is a key cultural center, and one of the most interesting destinations in the United Kingdom. It has a large number of students. It is seen by many as the «capital» of the north of England, the second city of the United Kingdom and is home to the UK's largest airport outside London.

The International University, the colleges, the studios known record labels and BBC Symphony Orchestra, the 2 art galleries, the dozens of theatrical scenes, the stadium of Manchester United and the neighborhoods with great cultural interest, such as the Greek-Cypriot, Chinese, Jewish but also, gay village in the city center, are poles of attractions for visitors within and outside Britain.

The building boom and business development that prevails in the city over the last decade, is responsible for the construction of five star hotels, modern apartments, fabulous restaurants and bars to suit all tastes and department stores (Selfridges, Harvey Nichols) which offer the «bird's milk».

Oxford

The city of Oxford is famous the world over for its University and place in history. For over 800 years, it has been a home to royalty and scholars.

Oxford, as the inhabitants proudly call it «the City of Knowledge», is nowadays, a bustling cosmopolitan town. Still with its ancient University, but home also to a growing hi-tech community.

Ιt offers its visitors: beautiful architecture, historic buildings, colleges, museums, libraries, and traditional pubs and gourmet restaurants for all tastes.
Contained in a gorgeous, the Ashmolean Museum has paintings, coins, musical instruments, antiquities, statues of deities, and a must see Egyptian, Greek and Cyprus exhibits which attract hundreds of visitors daily.

Wales

Wales is a land of contrasts, from secluded mountain valleys to crowded cities, with a heritage spanning the gamut from rich poetry and song to the grit of the coal mines.

Today, Cardiff, the capital of Wales is a vibrant, international city that offers visitors tremendous heritage attractions, as well as natural scenic beauty and spectacular modern architecture. The city’s rich culture has a wide sundry of ancient Roman and Norman influences combined with the industrial revolution and coal industry

Hi Philip very good post..:-)

I don't know anything about Manchester at all, I tend not to travel north ... but as you know I go to Oxford all the time, living only 12 miles from there..it is a great place to be.

As for Cardiff, that is also a lovely place though not been for years, I also used to live near there from 1992 - 2000 but I am going back there this weekend to a concert and then to see my brother-in-law ..!

Manchester is pretty similar to Liverpool. The wealthy areas are amazing but there are many poor areas dotted around the city centres. It's very strange...

Likewsie, it's the same in London. West End is so much better than East End. North of the Thames is better than South of the Thames.

Hi Anne! Cardiff is a place definetely worth visiting. The hotel I stayed has a wonderful bar and restaurant which I highly recommend-The Park Plaza Hotel. Have a nice time!

@Protege

@Cheryl, Kata, Vaggelis

@Turquoise diaries, Jani

Britain is a great destination when the weather turns gray; the Xmas markets in Manchester are quite amazing - compared I think only to Berlin.

@londoncalling

Well put! Manchester, like Liverpool and London have lots of different sides to it; I love the Albert Docks in Liverpool-and of course many London places, more than one could mention here
