Berlin's Wall, Germany

Berlin’s Wall of Shame
Snapshots by Phivos Nicolaides

No one visit to Berlin is considered complete without seen the symbol of the Cold War, Berlin Wall which has been called the "physical image" of the Iron Curtain. For 28 years, the colossal construction with its parallel chain-link fences and enclosed "death strip" controlled by machine-gun towers and minefields divided in two a city - Berlin and a country - Germany. Perhaps no wall in history has been more famous as a barrier to human freedom. The fall of the Berlin Wall is the most influential mark of the communist bloc downfall.

The Brandenburger Tor is a monumental gate built in 1791 as a symbol of peace. During the Cold War, when the gate was located right near the border between East and West Berlin, it became a symbol of a divided city. During the era of the Berlin Wall, this area was off limits in East Berlin.

Since the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Brandenburger Gate has become the symbol of a reunified Berlin. The Brandenburg Gate was one of the German capital’s 14 original city gates.

The Brandenburg Gate area has played a major role in the history of the city. During the Nazi period, it was the army’s favourite spot for military parades and after the war became a symbol of the dramatic division of the capital.

From the construction of the Wall in 1961 up until 1989 the Brandenburg Gate was inaccessible to the general public. After the fall of the wall, thousands of Germans gathered around the gate to celebrate the beginning of the new era in the history of the magnificent city and the country as a whole.

The East Side Gallery, a contemporary Artistic monument. The East Side Gallery is a stretch of wall that bears witness to oppression and injustice. It works as an art space but also as a place of joy and freedom.

For years, the west side of the Berlin Wall was a popular meeting point of graffiti sprayers, nowadays the most famous spraying artists have set their signs on the eastside of the longest preserved section of the Wall. The longest exhibition in the world.
A Brotherly kiss that reverberated around the world. The image of Honecker kissing Brezhnev is the most famous, and the most provocative, painting of the East Side Gallery… The largest open air gallery in the world was opened on September 28, 1990. 118 artists from 21 countries have painted several pictures on a 1,316 meter long section of the Berlin Wall, which is now a listed landmark.

The erection of the wall began on August 13, 1961 to stop the westward departure of the German people. It was designed carefully, but naturally there were many ‘loopholes’ for escape that had not been anticipated, let alone the incredible imagination of the people who were innovating in unbelievable ways of escape. More than 2.5 million Germans left the totalitarian hell and escaped to the West between 1949 and 1961.

In the East it was named "the anti-fascist protection wall" while in the west people named it "Wall of Shame". 155 km of humiliation of over 3 meters high, of which 43 km through the center of Berlin.

During the various stages of construction, concrete walls began to appear in 1965 and, over the years, hundreds of observation towers and barbed wire were added, as well as trenches and bunkers, while patrols and security were increased.

Coloured or differently shaped paving stones, or a shiny metal band in the soil, act as imperfect symbols of German division.

All tourists visiting to Berlin want to see the Wall at the East Side Gallery, the Brandenburg Gate and Checkpoint Charlie. Checkpoint Charlie "Checkpoint C" was the name given by the Western Allies to the most well-known Berlin Wall crossing point between East Germany and West Germany during the Cold War.

Our tour guide explained to us in every detail about the wall and how it was built and protected. The wall perfected in 1975 and was composed of slabs of 3.6 meters high and 1.2 meters wide. On the top of the wall a clean pipe was placed to make harder the jumping over it. It was also fortified with motion sensors, fencing net and barbed wire, trenches against vehicles.

Over 100 people died along this former line of German separation. The exact number of the victims who trying to get their freedorm are unknown. To understand better the Wall, you must think about its victims and the evil system it was built to protect.

Today, there are only three remaining portions of the wall: a section of 80 meters near Postdamer Plaz, a longer section near the river Spree and the third piece, turned into a monument, north of Bernauer Strasse. The building in the picture was in the East side of the city only a few meters away from the opposite building (see following photo).

A very few meters from the Berliner Mauer and opposite the building (previous pictures!).

Checkpoint Charlie and the Brandenburg Gate, without any remains of the wall, continue to attract millions of tourists from Germany and the rest of the world.

Checkpoint Charlie as tourist attraction. The ersatz guard house viewed from what was the American sector. Beyond it is a mast with an image of a Soviet soldier. The reverse side shows an American soldier.

Near the location of the guard house is the Haus am Checkpoint Charlie, a private museum opened in 1963 by Rainer Hildebrandt, which was augmented with a new building in the 1990s.

The Oberbaum Bridge is the most spectacular and most beautiful bridge in Berlin. It spans the river Spree in the south east of Berlin, linking Kreuzberg formerly in West Berlin and Friedrichshain formerly in East Berlin. Numerous legends and agent stories are told about this bridge, the former border crossing point between East and West Berlin. Memories of a devided city...

The desolate area that was during the cold war, is now completely redeveloped and has regained much of its 19th century grandeur.

The monumental boulevard called Stalinallee built in 1959, in East Berlin. It is in this street where annual parades took place. Because of the various architectural styles from ex Soviet Union, the Karl-Marx-Allee is a unique open-air museum of communist realist architecture in Germany.

The old "glory" on top! A "Traant"-the national car of East Germany. Remembering the "good" old communism days!!

The eight passing points were designed particularly for different sorts of people that could pass through. The most famous was Checkpoint Charlie, which was meant only to Allied personnel and non-German citizens. Today thousands of people crossing it and remember...

The East Side Gallery is a stretch of wall that bears witness to oppression and injustice. It works as an art space but also as a place of joy and freedom.

Strolling next to the wall. The Berlin Wall built in 1961. Twenty years ago, on the night of November 9, 1989, the Berlin Wall fall and German reunification was a reality.

The Berlin Wall was built in 1961 until its fall on the night of November 9, 1989 and the German reunification.

Two decades ago, West Germans and East Germans were divided by the heavily fortified wall. East Germans were barred by their communist leaders from traveling west. On November 9, 1989 the Wall came down. (Germany was divided since the end of World War II in 1945 and in 1949 two countries were born: Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic). In 2009, Berlin celebrated the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

What a lesson in history! How well I remember that date in 1989 when the wall came down. The news images were overwhelming. How wonderful that you had the opportunity to see this place up close and personal. I was also surprised by the numbers of people who escapted during that time. I had no idea!

Thank you for sharing this trip with us and the history you learned.

blessings to you my friend,
Debbie

@ Debbie. Despite the fact that I have visited 5-6 times Germany, it was my first time in Berlin. It was something I had in my mind for years. Although I knew very well the horrible story behind the Wall I was really shocked when I confronted with this shame of humanity... Dear Debbie, try to visit this city. If you like history you will love it. Hugs.

@ Turquoise Diaries. My dear friend Aysegul teshekurederim!

@ Susan. Thanks on all accounts my sweet friend Susan.

@ Margie. Thank you so much for your kind comment my dear friend Margie. I appreciate a lot your sweet words. hugs.

Fascinating! Berlin is growing and becoming more and more a place of destination for vacation and work. I recently saw a t.v. show that showed a couple and their apartment search. The prices are still reasonable and a good place to invest in some real estate property.

@ Shanti. I have an old article which I wrrote but is in Greek to send you. Warm regards.

@ JamanFou.

@ Cheryl. Thank you so much my dearest friend Cheryl for your generous comment. Kind regards.

@ Janie's World. It's a fascinating city and of course the construction is booming after so many years of destruction!

I lived in W-Berlin and my oldest daughter was born there while communism still ruled there.
On holidays there were thousands of W-Germans going across checkpoint Charlie to visit their relatives.
When the wall fell, we were already living in the States, and a East German couple could for the first time in their life visit the USA, the land where they had dreamed of, for so long (only America was not as perfect as they thought!)

Phivos Nicolaides said...

@ Jeannette stgermain. Danke Jeannette. I can imagine what crossing points mean, as I live in a divided island!!!
United States might not be the real paradise for some ex-East Germans, but definitely East Germany was a hell in terms of human rights and basic freedoms. Don't you agree on this?

Let's hope we will see at the next few years another wall, the last wall in the world, the wall of Nicosia to be served just like the wall of Berlin, as a tourist attraction and something to remember that the walls must not divide the hearts of people. Love must unite the human race across the world.
