Christmas in Prague, Czech Republic

Τhe Czech festive magic
Snapshots by Phivos Nicolaides

It is not an exaggeration to say that Prague is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It’s an exciting place a «Jewel in the Crown» of Central Europe with epic history, rich culture and wonderful sightseeing.

The dramatic history of Prague is reflected in the amazing beauty of the buildings.

St. Vitus's Cathedral is the largest and the most important church in Prague. Apart from divine services the coronations of Czech kings and queens also took place in it. (Photo: Georgia Kouma)
St.Vitus´s Cathedral is considered to be an architectural and spiritual dominant of Czech lands.

The historical part of the Cathedral (choir, crypt and tower) is a part of sighseeing tour of the Prague Castle.

For centuries it has been known as Zlatá Praha or Golden Prague - a glittering jewel of art and architecture nestling snugly at the heart of Europe.

A history of more than 1100 years speaks for itself.

Home to emperors and kings, artists and astronomers, this magic city has inspired artists, musicians and writers.

After of 40 years of communism, Prague has returned to the capitalist system to become one of Europe's most popular tourist destinations.
Under the communism the city was seldom visited by tourists until 1989. Despite of the mass tourism, the city's mysterious soul survives.

Celebrating Christmas in Prague, you have a great time for sure.

Following Santa as he makes his magical journey!

Prague starts to prepare for Christmas in mid-November, some stores even earlier.

Decorated streets with colorful lights and the beautiful gift shop windows call for customers more than ever.
This magical Christmas time in Prague holds till the end of December, until the New Years Eve. A ride with an old coach and horses is a great experiense itself.
Everywhere you go, you uncover surprisingly some aspect of the city's beauties!
Prague is to be explored strolling through the busy streets.
Cozy restaurants offer excellent cuisine dishes in lovely settings and of course, there is the world famous Czech beer to enjoy.
Much of the post-communism reconstruction has been driven by tourism. Some old buildings have been transformed into fine restaurants and stylish hotels.
All types of souvenirs (from China!) to remember the magnificent city. Souvenir shops for the needs of the tourists...

Forget communism control… pretty women looking for elegant fashion designs.

Shoppers all in black looking the window shopping!

In the old city shopping area a lot of people is strolling the streets enjoying the lack of cars.
Fancy shops are always full of people making their shopping.
The capital city has everything for every taste. Young beautiful, glamorous Czech, doll-like.

Christmas markets start four weeks before Christmas Eve (December 24th), so on 1st December and are open daily.

Christmas in the city starts with the Christmas markets opening up all over Prague on November 29 and are up until January 1.

We much enjoyed the life of the modern city, the theatres, the food the entertainment in general and of course my wife Popi the endless hours of shopping!

Many trendy latest hairstyles are coming up both for men and women in the contemporary world.

New years and new hairstyles often go hand in hand and discovering a new hairstyle sometimes involve changing the length of the hairstyle itself...
Christmas markets (Vanocni trh) are a key ingredient of the Czech festive magic.

A fascinating city with friendly and charming people.

Even a short visit in Prague gives you a sense of familiarity with the city.

There are so many places and things to be explored...
Prague is one of the most popular travel destinations with young tourists.
For the Czechs, December 24 (Stedry den) is the most enjoyable day of Christmas holidays. It literally means "Generous Day", probably due to the abundance of food, presents and good cheer.
Czech, a consonant-rich Slavic language, is one of the most difficult European languages to learn.

1989: The end of communism. Velvet revolution, Vaclav Havel elected President of Czechoslovakia. A new era began...

In 1992 the historical core of the city was listed in the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage Register.

A Czech blond brunette strolling in the little old streets of the city.

Need some break.

The old man down the street.

Street music performance of excellent music!

Greek youngsters from Nicosia, Cyprus took a break from their school responsibilities to enjoy a special trip to Prague. Above picture speaks for itself.

You captured one shot that especially spoke to me of the culture and ageless elegance of this beautiful city: it is the older woman posing in front of the train with her cane, fine handbag, coat and hat. What a wonderful portrait.

I think I would adore Prague. It seems like my kind of city. My sister's husband is of Czech descent and I have a suspicion that they will go as a family upon the high school graduation next year of their oldest son. My sis has not mentioned this but it is what I would plan if I was her!

1100+ years of history - I can only imagine the excitement of being around such richness.

Julie and I have not been to Prague. We are planning one year to spend the Christmas season in Prague and Berlin, and your photos show why this will be a necessity for us. Great post.

@ Lydia. Thank you dear Lydia for your kind comments. I do like the older woman posing in front of the train. When I saw her she immediately attracted my attention. More pictures of Prague in the next post!

@ JamanFou.

@ Νuheila. Thank you so much my dear Nuheila. Have a great day and a greater lovely evening!

@ Frau. In my opinion a week is more than enough to see and enjoy the city and its people. Enjoy your evening dear Frau.

hi phivos! you've manage to capture a lot in just one day! ^0^
the sights are awesome, if there's one thing i'd like to re-visit, it would be prague, the old town and the famous charles bridge, there's just so much history to it. ^0^
but, mind you, czech people can be a little bossy, ^0^ (in my experience)
anyways, i wish you also a happy Hearts day to you and your family! ^-^
