Ancient Halicarnassus, Asia Minor, Turkey

Halicarnassus an ancient city once upon a time...

Τhe statues of three great personalities of Ancient Halicarnassus, Herodotus, Artemisia and Mausolus.

Halicarnassus was an ancient Greek city on the southwest coast of Caria, (Asia Minor), on a picturesque, advantageous site on the Ceramic Gulf (Gulf of Kos) and on the site of the modern city of Bodrum, Turkey.

The ancient city of Alikarnassos was a well fortified large city arranged in amphitheatre form around its natural harbour.
Halicarnassus was originally a Dorian colony of Greece. According to tradition, it was founded by Dorian Troezen in the Peloponnese.

The figures on its coins, such as the head of Medusa, Athena and Poseidon, or the trident, support the statement that the mother cities were Troezen and Argos.

A dynasty of Carian kings in the 4th cent. B.C. was made famous by Mausolus, whose wife, Artemisia II (who was also his sister!) after his death in 353 BCE, succeeded him and invited Greek artists to completed for him the erection of a magnificent tomb (the Mausoleum) in his memory.

It was so gigantic (It was about 45 meters tall, and the exterior walls had sculptural reliefs),
and elaborate that it was included in the standard list of Seven Wonders of the Ancient World
It was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World together with the Great Pyramid at Giza, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Statue of Zeus at Olympia, the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, the Colossus of Rhodes and the Lighthouse of Alexandria.

Mausoleum, a word now used to designate any large and imposing burial structure. Τhe architects of this monumental structure  in the capital city Halicarnassus were Pythius and Satyros.
The tomb was lavishly adorned with sculptures by Greek artists Scopas, Bryaxis, Leochares and Timotheus. Reliefs depicted the famous battle of Amazonomachy between the Greeks and Amazons.

In the Greek world, it was not unusual that a city founder (ktistis) received cultic honors and a tomb on the central square of the new town, and this also happened to Maussolus.

It is believed that the mausoleum was destroyed by a powerful earthquake sometime between the 11th and 15th centuries A.D., and its ruins recycled in other local buildings.

The ancient theatre situated on the hillside that overlooks the charming harbor of the city. The amphi-theater has a seating capacity of 1300. It was built during the Carian reign in the Hellenistic age (330 - 30 BC.).

It was built by the ancient Greek civilization which flourished for centuries in the region of Asia Minor and it's another witness of the great past of Halicarnassus.

It was the birthplace of the Greek historian Herodotus (c. 484-c. 425 BC), of Dionysius of Halicarnassus (1st century BC) historian and teacher of rhetoric also, of Aelius Dionysius (2nd century) Greek rhetorician and musician

Alexander the Great conquered the city in 334 B.C.
Το 334 π.Χ.

After the death of Alexander in Babylon (11 June 323), Caria and its capital were contested by his Successors. was part of the empire of Lysimachus in 301; and later became a province of the Ptolemaic empire;

In 192 BC, the city became a Roman colony.
Το 192 π.Χ.
It came under Roman rule in 129 BC, and in early Christian times was a bishopric.
Το 129 π.Χ.

In the 6'th. century BC., the region came under Persian rule. The city was captured by the Lydians in the first half of the 6th century BC and then by the Persians in 546 BC.

At an early period Halicarnassus was a member of the Doric Hexapolis, which included Cos, Cnidus, Lindos, Kameiros and Ialysus.

The city came under Ottoman rule in 1522 AD when Suleyman the Magnificent captured Rhodes and forced the knights to move to Malta.

From the 6th century BC onwards, with the development of commerce, all the Greek settlements which were located on the shoreline of Asia Minor become powerful cities.
During that period an impressive economic and cultural progress is noted especially in the areas of education, science and the arts.

It is during that period that Alikarnassos participates along with the main Greek colonies of Asia Minor and the Aegean islands in the foundation of Nafkratis town in Egypt.

The Myndos gate is located on the west side of the city. This is one of the two entrances of ancient Halicarnassus. It was part of the towns wall. The gate is named after the place Myndos because it faces the ancient Myndos place. (Photo: Denise Moura, Ilana and Mariana Moura, our friends from Brazil).

Only some parts of the city walls remained until today.

The Ionian and Dorian Greeks colonized the west of Caria and joined the Carian population in forming Greek-dominated states there.
History lovers and more, visiting the city are encountered by a great depression viewing all these ruins mixed up in the yard of the old castle.

Today, the remains of the ancient city offer a sad sight. Stones of the monuments as well as other remains of Ancient Halicarnassus can today be found in the castle of the city.
