Ethnological museum of Thraki, Alexandroupolis, Greece

Ethnological museum of Thraki, Alexandroupolis
In the beautiful northern Greek city of Alexandroupolis, among other galleries  and museums there is also The Angeliki Yannakidou Ethnological Museum of Thraki.
The gorgeous neoclassical stone building which hosts the Ethnological Museum of Thrace was constructed in 1899 as a residence of a rich businessman.
It was purchased in 1937 by another rich merchant and in 1998, the building was renovated to house the Ethnological Museum of Thraki.

The neoclassical stone building at 63, 13th May Street was restored with thoroughly modern materials and amenities, converting it into a fully-functional, modern museum.
The Museum displays and preserves traditional items of cultural importance of the region, including dresses, household, agriculture instruments, photos and many other objects.

The main purpose of the Museum is to preserve folklore and promote Thracian culture.
It’s a marvelous place where people can learn about the living culture of Thrace, and at the same time to offer the opportunity for promotion the Thracian culture.
Part of the material has been organised thematically, so that objects, images, videos, and sound give visitors an idea of social and economic life in Thrace from the 18th century to the 1970s, when traditional life still continued in the region.
A place which connects tradition and the memory contained within it with the concerns of modern society.
Chryso and Phivos Kyriakides with Popi Nicolaides learning about the customs and the traditions of the  Thrace area.

The items which are displayed, are motivating people especially the youth to re-evaluate the concept of tradition.
Thracian men wore potouria, wide trousers narrowing at the ankles. Women's dress differed, however, each costume expressing the character of the social group from which it originated.

Clothing in Thrace developed out of the demographic shifts and changes provoked by the historical events in the region, which were in turn determined by its distinctive geophysical features.
The styles of dress peculiar to the various ethnic groups who co-existed all over Thrace from the start of the Ottoman period —Greeks, Pomaks, Armenians, Jews, Turks, and Roma— made up the sartorial picture of the region.
The oldest types of costume we know of date from the end of the 19th century. After the Second World War, they were modified, and new ones were devised, which co-existed alongside the old ones.
All the material — objects and written records — constitutes a nucleus, an incentive for further research and activities, with the aim of preserving historical memory and the knowledge contained within it.
Men's traditional dress was similar all over Thrace.

The pottery workshops produced simple, utilitarian pottery, in the form of chimney pots, water pipes, cooking pots, milking pails, jugs, flowerpots, and vases.

Το Μουσείο το επισκέφτηκα τον Οκτώβρη του 2006. Σχημάτισα την εντύπωση όμως ότι είναι ιδιωτικό, ή κάνω λάθος;
