Kalymnos, is a Greek island in the southeastern Aegean Sea. It belongs to the Dodecanese group of islands. Is located between the islands of Kos and Leros.
It’s the third most populous island of the Dodecanese, after Kos and Rhodes.
The island is mainly mountainous, with a complicated pattern.
The coastline is very irregular, with many sheltered coves. There are some springs, one among them being thermal.
Since the ancient times, the life and culture of Kalymnos Island was linked to the sponge.
This is the reason Kalymnos is also known as the "Sponge-divers' island".
The capital of Kalimnos is Pothia, a labyrinth of narrow streets full of roar of motorcycles.
On the sea – coast there is a sculpture of a serene – symbol of the island,
and a sponge diver erected like for a jump into the depths.
Sponge diving has always been a common occupation on Kalymnos.
Sponges have been the main source of income for the inhabitants, bringing wealth on the island and making it famous in the Mediterranean.
The Greek sponge trade was centered close to Dodecanese with Kalymnos being the most prominent for centuries and until mid-80’s.
In recent years, tourism has become important for the island, particularly for rock climbing.
The soil is mainly made of limestone, but in the valleys there is a compact bank of volcanic ash, relic of an ancient volcano.
The island is mainly barren, except the two fertile valleys of Vathi and Pothia, where olives, oranges and vineyards grow.
Earthquakes are a frequent occurrence around Kalymnos.
Cozy houses.
Clear blue waters, majestic sunsets, windswept hills, elaborate stone formations , endless stretches of sea spattered with tiny islets.
