The ancient Thorikos, Attica Greece

Treasures of Greece
Thorikos is an ancient town located in Attica near Lavrion. One of the archaeological sites in the area is the ancient theater of Thorikos.

Thorikos was one of the oldest settlements in Attica and one of the oldest naval fortresses. It was inhabited from the fourth millennium BC.

Archaeological evidence suggests that the lead mining in the area began during the third millennium BC and silver from 1500 BC

It mainly covered the hill and the small peninsula lying between the bay of Thorikou and Fragkolimanou. The town was fortified during the Peloponnesian war.

The main attraction of the site of Thorikos is the ancient theater, which is believed to be the oldest in Greece today.
The ancient theater of Thorikos is considered the oldest in Greece and unique for its peculiar oval shape.
It is striking that just south of the orchestra of the theater and a cemetery was created which was in use from the 6th century BC mid- 4th century. BC.
Houses, workshops and galleries around the theater make up a village and show the density of habitation and the range of activities of the ancient inhabitants of Thorikos.
Thorikos was an industrial town in ancient times with lots of silver mines.

The area was known in antiquity for its silver mines which furnished Athens with much of the basis of its power and wealth.
The excavations have brought to light part of the prehistoric settlement, as well as an extensive part of the historical deme, namely residential quarters, cemeteries, the theater, and the so-called "industrial quarter", along with ancient mines.
Thorikos' dog's cute face looks like he is guarding the whole site!
