Budapest, Hungary

A beauty in the arms of the Danube River
The first time I visited Budapest was in the early ‘80s. At that time the country was under the Communism rule. After 20 years I am back again.
I try to spot differences, and although there are many, I concentrate only to the youth of Hungary which today; makes the real difference between the past and the present.
Kings of Magyars, Turkish conquerors, emperors of Habsburgs and Soviet commissars left their footprints in a city.
Budapest is the capital and the largest city of Hungary. With green filled parks, interesting museums, and memorable monuments.

Budapest, metropolis of 2 million inhabitants. One city, three names. The hilly Buda on the west bank of the Danube, Ovouda northwest and flat Pest on the east side.
The three cities that were built over 2,000 years, joined and became the capital city of the country in 1873.

The most visited site is Trinity Square, dominated by one of Budapest's most characteristic building, the Mathias Church, home of many coronation ceremonies of Hungarian kings.

Top attraction in Pest is the Hungarian Parliament (the largest in Europe), a magnificent building completed in 1902.
The archetype for the Parliament in Budapest was the Westminster Abbey in London. (Photo: Popi Nicolaides, Stella Lantsia and a Hungarian young girl).

The neo-Gothic palace it’s one of the landmarks of the capital. The outer walls are decorated with statues of Hungarian monarchs and military commanders.

The construction of Parliament began in 1885 and completed in 1904. it is one of Europe's most splendid Parliament buildings.
The impressive hall where the Parliament proceedings take place (In the picture Alexandra Kocevar).
One side of the Parliamant is used by the government of Hungary, the second part is for visitors and tourists.
Rich, impressive and elegant interior decoration with marbles and glass.

The neo-Gothic Parliament, containing amongst other things the Hungarian Crown Jewels.  The Hungarian Holy Crown was kept in Fort Knox. KY, USA since 1945 and finally returned to Hungary on January 1978.
The best way to explore Budapest is walking. Most attractions are easily accessible on foot and the center has too many walk ways.
Heroes' Square is the biggest and most impressive square of Budapest. I'is a must see in Budapest.
It was constructed to mark the 1000th anniversary of the arrival of the Magyar tribes in 1896. The pedestal below is occupied by the ornate horseback statues of the seven Hungarian leaders who led the tribes into the Carpathian Basin in 896 AD.
In the middle stands the Millenium Monument, with Archangel Gabriel on top, holding the double cross of Christianity and the Holy Hungarian Crown.
Sculptures of Hungarian heroes are on display here. On the left side  are the kings of Hungary.
On the right side there are the sculptures of 7 generals.
In front of the column is a large stone cenotaph surrounded by an iron chain. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
The benchmark in order to orient are the seven bridges which are connecting the two parts of the city.

Budapest has a rich art scene, and is home to many of art galleries and museums.
The bridge has the name of Istvan Szechenyi, a major supporter of its construction, but is most commonly known as the Chain Bridge.

The Chain Bridge spans the River Danube between Buda and Pest. Opened in 1849, it was the first permanent bridge across the Danube in Budapest.
The Liberty Bridge connects Buda and Pest across the River Danube. It is the third public road bridge in Budapest, located at the southern end of the City Centre. The bridge was built between 1894 and 1896.
Many trams use to cross the twin-road bridge, which is also heavily burdened with car traffic.
One of the world's most romantic and enchanting capitals rich in famous landmarks, monuments and museums.
It's a city steeped in tradition, glorious architecture... and much more...
It is a fascinating city to explore and take in the atmosphere, especially around the old part of the city.

Deservedly claimed the title of "Diamond of the Danube".
It has especially rich traditions in folk and classical music and was the birthplace of numerous outstanding performers and composers, including Franz Liszt, Bela Bartok and Zoltan Kodaly.
Admire the spectacular panoramic views from the Citadella on top of Gellert hill.
In 1987, Buda Castle and the banks of the Danube were included in the UNESCO list list of World Heritage Sites.

This exhibition is situated outside the fortress walls, on the north-east side of the Citadel.
Οne of Europe's beautiful cities, travelers are quickly recognising the appeal of Budapest, with increasing visitors per year.

Nowadays it is one of Budapest's biggest tourist attractions and probably the best view point in the city.

No wonder why almost all tourists pass from this point.

Yearly temperature is 11 grade Celsius, the average July temperature is 22°C, and the January one: -1°C.
The place is very popular for taking pictures day and night.
Warm feelings and friendships even under severe winter conditions...

I remember our continuous discussions about international politics and economic problems of our countries... the picnics and the trips in the mountains. All these are unforgettable experiences for me.

Phivos, I think that is the most vivid, detailed journey I've ever taken of Budapest! Besides the culture and politics, there is a mystical side that intrigues, too: gypsies and the threat of being stolen!, the polarity of Buda and Pest, the unique cuisine with paprika, kielbasa, wienerschnitzel, the famous composer Bela Bartok, and most of all, the concealed, ancient casbahs... everyone must feel induced as I do now to visit there! me ♥

I remember visiting here seven years. Memories of the church, the hill top views, the bridges and Heroes square. Unfortunately it was not long enough and missed the interior of the Parliament building. It is a shame that the destination did not become popular with tourists from my local airport and the flight was stopped.
