Dubrovnik , Croatia - Part 2

The pearl of the Adriatic
The city's old flag has the word Libertas (freedom) on it, and the entrance to the fortress just outside the city walls bears the inscription Non bene pro toto libertas venditur auro, meaning Liberty is not sold for any kind of gold.
Continued from Dubrovnik part Ι Συνέχεια από το Ντουμπρόβνικ μέρος Ι.
In  Croatian, the city is known as Dubrovnik; inItalian as Ragusa, and its historical name in Greek is Raiyia.
The medieval town was built in the 13th century and has remained virtually unchanged up today.
The current Croatian name was officially adopted in 1918 after the fall of Austria - Hungary empire.
The city achieved a remarkable level of development, particularly during the 15th and 16th centuries.
Popi Nicolaides in the well preserved old harbour of the city, which is still in use and attracts a lot of visitors.
Dr. Antun Nicetic, in his book “History of the Port of Dubrovnik”, expounds the theory that Dubrovnik was established by Greek sailors.
Dubrovnik’s charm holds an eventful and lively history. Before being absorbed into the Napoleonic Empire in 1806, Dubrovnik thrived as a sovereign merchant state for over 700 years.
Dubrovnik was founded in the 7th century AD. Although it passed from Byzantine, Venetian and Hungarian rule, managed to remain the only independent city-state in the Adriatic Sea (called Ragusa) and competed in Venice in maritime trade.
Tο Ντουμπρόβνικ ιδρύθηκε τον 7ο μ. Χ.
Today Dubrovnik is the proudest feather in Croatia's tourist cap, and one of the most beautiful towns in the Mediterranean.

Few of renaissance buildings survived the earthquake of 1667 but fortunately enough remain to give an idea of the city's architectural heritage.

The rich culture and history of Dubrovnik has given this historic town a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The whole city is a monument, a celebration to one praised human virtue: freedom.
On the waterfront lies the fortress of St. John. It houses the Maritime Museum of Dubrovnik, and an aquarium with many marine species of the Mediterranean operates on the lower deck of the fort.

The finest Renaissance highlight is the Sponza Palace which dates from the 16th century and is currently used to house the National Archives.

Only few cities in the world manage to impress the visitor as much as the medieval city of Dubrovnik.
Exploring the shades of the narrow streets and alleys on its sides.
Walking is the best way to explore the Croatian charming town. But after a couple of hours strolling around, you need definitely rest...

Siting and relaxing on the stairs of history...
