Pecs, Hungary

Cultural capital of Europe in 2010

Pecs, or Sopiane as it was called by the Romans, has over 2,000 years of its history. It's the fifth largest city of Hungary
In 1998 the city of Pécs was given theUNESCO prize Cities for peace for maintaining the cultures of the minorities, and also for its tolerant and helping attitude toward refugees of the Balkan Wars.

Mrs. Androulla Vassiliou, EU commissioner for education, culture, youth, multilingualism and sports  and Mr. George Vassiliou, former president of Cyprus paid a two-day visit in the City of Pécs, Hungary, cultural capital of Europe in 2010.
Η κα.
The commissioner arrived in this unique, sub-mediterranean pearl on invitation by Mayor Dr. Zsolt Páva and Rector Professor József Bódis.  On Friday, March 25th Mayor Páva received Mrs. and Mr. Vassiliou in his office, which was followed by lunch in a famous Császár Restaurant given in honor of her excellency and his excellency.
After lunch Mrs. Vassiliou was escorted by Vice Rector Professor László I. Komlósi to the Aladár Rácz Roma Cultural and Educational Center. A group of Romas ranging from pre-school age to elementary school to university received the commissioner and gave her an idea about the educational opportunities and integratuional difficulties of the Roma ethnic group. The commissioner had the opportunity to discuss with five Romani university students.
The commissioner visited the Klomo-Library of the University of Pécs, where rector József Bódis, Vice Rector László Komlósi and secretary general of UNEECC (University Network of the European Cultural Capitals) Mrs. Gyöngyi Pozsgai, were her hosts.
The University of Pécs was founded in 1367 as the first university of Hungary. The Klimo Library was the ecclesiastic library of bishop Klomi who in 1740 opened his library to the public. Thus, the Klimo Library became the first public library in Pécs.

Professors László and Elisabeth Komlósi accompanied Mrs. and Mr. Vassiliou to a concert in the evening. The new Kodály Center is the Concert Hall of the City of Pécs that was built on the occasion of the Cultural Capital of Europe. They listened to the symphonies by Franz Liszt and Sergei Rachmaninov.
The commissioner visited the Mosque of Jakovali Hassan on the Main Square of Pécs and the Roman Necropolis, a UNESCO Wolrd Cultural Heritage site. The underground heritage, with the highlights of Cella Septichora, was shown to the couple by Prof. Bálint Bachmann, dean of the Engineering Faculty of the University of Pécs. Prof. Bálint Bachmann, and his father, Prof. Zoltán Bachman were the main architects during the reconstruction of the Early Christian Necropolis of the Roman Town called Sopianae.
After their visit in Pécs, Mrs. and Mr. Vassiliou went back to Budapest where the Hungarian Presidency provides for an array of European Events for EU politicians and European governments.

This seems like a nice city with some great architecture. It is good to know that it has a history of being known as a place of Balkan peace.
