The city of Lincoln, with a population over 80.000 inhabitants is situated 141 miles north of the city of London.

Although having a superb heritage to preserve, Lincoln today is a thriving progressive city.

Its name to ancient times was Lindon meaning pool ('lin') at the foot of the hill ('don'), and the Romans simply latinized the name to Lindum.

Charming old style architecture.

The city is a tourist centre.

Many visitors come to see the numerous historic buildings including the cathedral, the castle, and the Medieval Bishop's Palace.

When Magna Carta was drawn up in 1215, one of the witnesses was Hugh of Wells, Bishop of Lincoln. One of only four surviving originals of the document is preserved in Lincolh Castle.

This settlement was built by a deep pool (the modern Brayfor Pool) in the River Witham at the foot of a large hill.
The origins of the name Lincoln may come by the Brythonic language of Iron Age Britain's Celtic inhabitants as Lindon "The Pool", presumably referring to the Brayford Pool.

Because of its climate, Lincoln attracts many of its tourists in summer, but also in  December when the city holds its annual Christmas Market.

Remigius de Fécamp, first bishop of Lincoln, ordered the first cathedral to be built in Lincoln, in 1072.  Bishop Remigious built the first Lincoln Cathedral on the present site, finishing it in 1092.

Lincoln Cathedral is simply a magnificent church that you can enjoy by spending time in and around it. When a saw this Cathedral a few weeks ago I felt extremely lucky
In 1141, the timber roofing was destroyed in a fire.

The cathedral was rebuilt and expanded but it was again destroyed by an earthquake about forty years later, in 1185.
The new bishop began a massive rebuilding and expansion program.

This allowed the creation and support of larger windows.

The old town around the Cathedral is simply beautiful. The narrow streets the cute restaurants and shops take you to a different world

Τhe diocese of Lincoln, the largest in England, had more monasteries than the rest of England put together.

Lincoln Cathedral (in full The Cathedral Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Lincoln, or sometimes St. Mary's Cathedral) is a historic Anglican cathedral in Lincoln in England and seat of the Bishop of Lincoln.
It was reputedly the tallest building in the world for 249 years (1300–1549). It is highly regarded by architectural scholars; the eminent Victorian writer John Ruskin declared, "I have always held... that the cathedral of Lincoln is out and out the most precious piece of architecture in the British Isles... have."

The cathedral is the 3rd largest in Britain after St Paul's and York Minster, being 148 m by 83 m.
It is Lincolnshire's largest building, and until 1549 it was the tallest medieval tower in Europe. There are thirteen bells in the south-west tower, two in the north-west tower, and five in the central tower.

'Lincoln' is a name with a resonance.

Judging by the photos in this post, I would say the cathedral deserves its epithets of: magnificient, largest, tallest, the most precious.
