Lefkosia - Cyprus

The capital city with the last dividing wall in Europe
Cyprus is a small European country with a long history and a rich culture. Since the Turkish invasion of 1974, Nicosia, has been a divided capital.

Lefkosia (Nicosia) is the capital of Cyprus, a status it has enjoyed for 1000 years since the 10th century, though its beginnings date back 5000 years to the Bronze centre.
There are various suggestions as to the origin of the name 'Lefkosia' - but the most likely one is linked to the popular tree, the tall 'Lefki ' which once adorned the city.

But, wandering around Nicosia we came upon a newly-opened crossing, manned by UN peacekeepers armed with machine guns.
Lefkosia was occupied by the Romans, the Franks, the Knights Templar, the Venetians, the Turks and the British.
The city in the heart of the island, although fractured in two, beats with vibrant, distinct identities on both sides to the green line.

Since the independence in 1960 Nicosia has grown into a bustling cosmopolitan European city.
In Eleftheria square, relatives of missing persons attached yellow ribbons to a tree along with the names of loved ones who went missing in 1974. The ribbons are placed there every year, signifying hope that those who were left behind will eventually discover what had happened.

The "Imprisoned Graves" is a small cemetery located in the Central Jail of Nicosia, where 13 EOKA fighters, during the 1955-1959 liberation struggle for the liberation of Cyprus from the United Kingdom, were interred.

The most significant influences on modern Nicosia date from the 15th ad 16th centuries. Under the Lusignans, the capital saw the construction of a number of palaces, mansions, churches and monasteries.

People living in a divided city, such as Nicosia, must be tough. After all the situation could become inflammable.
Let's hope Nicosia will stay peaceful and friendly forever.
