Vergina, Greece

The most important archaeological site in Macedonia, Greece
Shapshots by Phivos Nicolaides

Vergina is a small village 75 km from Thessaloniki, and 515 km from Athens. Due to the discovery of the ancient city of Aigai, the ancient capital of the Macedonian kings, and its cemetery, is now well known worldwide and enjoy historical recognition, as the most important archaeological site in Macedonia.

Archaeological evidence proves that the area was continuously inhabited from the Early Bronze Age, around three thousand years B.C., to gradually become (11th-8th centuries B.C.) an important rich and densely inhabited centre.

The city reached its highest point of prosperity in the Archaic (7th-6th centuries B.C.) and Classical periods (5th-4th centuries), when it was the most important urban centre of the area, the seat of the Macedonian kings and the place where all the traditional sanctuaries were established.

Vergina is securely identified as this lost city of mythical power and importance. It was from here that Alexander the Great started his campaign to establish a world wide imperium, not to enslave the peoples inhabiting the places he would conquer, but to free them from despotism.

It’s here where King Philip II (Philipos) was assassinated and buried (in 336 B.C.). The tomb discovered in 1978 and the stunning artefacts brought to light.

One of the royal tombs in the Great Tumulus is identified as that of Philip II, father of Alexander the Great. King Philip II conquered all the Greek cities, paving the way for his son Alexander the Great and the expansion of the Hellenic world.

King Philipos II astonishing Gold Crown found inside the Gold Larnax in Vergina.

It was famous in antiquity for the wealth of the royal tombs which were gathered in its extensive necropolis.

The entrance to the site.

As seen from outside, this building looks exactly like an ancient earthen tumulus. Underneath are the impressive and rich royal tombs.

The entrance to the royal tombs in the Great Tumulus and the fascinating museum.

From left, Evgenia Alexandridis, Petros Alexandritis and Popi Nicolaides after the visit to the royal tombs and the museum.

No wonder why thousands of tourists from all over the world visit this place to see by themselves the astonishing archaeological treasures.

Evgenia and Petros Alexandritis very pleased from what they have seen.

The first excavations on the site were carried out in the 19th century by the French archaeologist L. Heuzey. In 1977, professor Manolis Andronicos brought to light the royal tombs in the Great Tumulus of Vergina (Megali Toumba).

Young people focusing in world history with respect and appreciation.

Thinking that the discovery of the remarkable tomb of Philip II (359-336 B.C.) is considered to be one of the most important archaeological events of the century...

Young students from all over the world coming face to face with the glorious past.

Since 1977, continuing excavations have revealed a series of significant monuments.
An underground building was constructed in 1993 to enclose and protect the royal tombs, maintaining the stable temperature and humidity necessary to preserve the wall paintings.
The Shield, made of Gold and Ivory found in pieces in one of the corners of the tomb. It took five years of high specialized toil to reassemble the countless bits.

Very promising to see young students strolling around the site.

It is an exceptional tour by all means and you better don't miss it...

I fell in love with Vergina nearly 20 years ago on my first visit to Greece. I was so consumed by everything there, I could have sat there forever. And, on the day that we visited there was no one else there so it was an extra exceptional experience. We're planning to take the children soon. Thanks for the great reminder. Great photos!

Have a wonderful week!

@ Aναστασία.

Lydia. Dear Lydia, I much appreciate your generous comment and so kind words. I'm glad you like the history of mankind and you can absorb things from the past.Alexander was named Great because he had great ideas for his age and for his time. One thing I really admire on him is his respect, tolerance and appreciation on other cultures and civilazations. I wish you one day to be able to visit such an interesting historical site. You may stard from or island of CYPRUS with a history of 5.000 years!! You are most welcome.
