Buenos Aires, Argentina

Romantic Buenos Aires

By Phivos Nicolaides

The distant journey to Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, was an enjoyable experience. Far away from Europe, it charged our imagination and created wonderful pictures full of beauty. The name Argentina comes from the Latin 'argentums' which means silver. It was used by the first Spanish conquerors (Conquistadores) from 1536 went travelling to the river Rio de la Plata (river of silver) and believing that the area was full of silver.

With impressing buildings of the 19th century (in various architectural styles), beautiful colonial buildings gives you the impression of a metropolis city which had lived historical moments of glory in the past. The «eternal city like water and air», as it is called by the famous Argentinian writer Jorge Luis Borches, is an elegant city, with lovely parks, beautiful old buildings, amazing neighbourhoods, beautiful and great natural beauty and endless and impressed streets. The roads are so large that the numbering of houses in some roads may even reach the thousands! The city is designed with parallel and vertical roads, so as to create building blocks. The Spaniards were those who started designing in this way the cities of the New World.

Buenos Aires is a cosmopolitan city, one of the most interesting and most prosperous cities in Latin America. It is the homeland of 3 million residents gathered in 48 districts (Barrios). Some of the most known suburbs are La Boca, San Telmo, Recoleta, Palermo, and Puerto Madero. Buenos Aires city was named in honor of Santa Maria de los Buenos Aires, the protector of sailos. Surrounded by endless extensive plains (pampa) the region was colonize in 1580. The «immovable river», crossing Buenos Aires, is used as a port for imports and exports from Europe.
The two most important historical dates for the country is 25 May 1810 when the first national meeting of representatives was established and 9 July 1816 with the Declaration of Independence of the country with General Jose de San Martin, hero of national independence. Influenced by European culture, Buenos Aires is considered as the Europe of Latin America. The first glance of the buildings, roads and people I see, gives me the impression that I am in another European city. This picture however changes when I see old cars of a certain age circulating! 95% of the population is white mainly Spanish and Italian origin. It is not a coincidence that Argentians call their beautiful city as «Paris» of the South America.
Buenos Aires has its own character entirely, which makes it both beautiful and attractive. When the plane landed at the international airport ‘Ezeiza’ in the early hours I had a positive feeling because I had heard and read so much about Argentina, which for years made me desire this trip. I can still hear in my ears the well-known song «Don't cry for me Argentina»...

It is the month of July, but here in the southern hemisphere is the heart of winter. Its raining and cold weather makes one require heavy clothing. It is dawn and the city begins to wake up. The streets are filled cars and people. We are driving towards to our hotel, which is located in a central part of the city. The reception was warm and the first contact with the elegant, local (Portenios ie residents of the port) was a pleasant surprise for us.
The Argentinians are friendly and welcoming people but a bit more modest than us. Some of our Argentinian friends who had served with the United Nations peacekeeping force, come to see us at the hotel as soon as we arrived. We embraced (French style) and we sad down to remember old times. Elephteria a lady from Nicosia who had married an Argentinian was our translator.
Our Italian origin guide Luis Mendias began early the next morning work with us. Good morning, welcome to Buenos Aires he tells us with broken Greek and continues in Spanish. Welcome the country of Tango. What we see today, started from the beginning of 1500 with the first settlements of Spaniards. Today the city has a population of 13 million inhabitants, 1 / 3 of the population of the country. Key attractions We admire the beautiful old buildings of the 18th and 19th century and the modern glass skyscrapers that coexist in harmony.
The historic square May (Plaza de Mayo) is the trademark of the city and not unfairly, it is our first stop. It was named in memory of the proclamation of independence of the country from Spain on 25 May 1810. It is a beautiful square, which is adorned by the Presidential Palace with the characteristic red colour (Casa Rosada). Here is the City Hall, the Cathedral strictly neoclassical style, with the tomb of the Argentine national hero Jose de San Martin, the imposing mansion of the National Bank of Argentina but also the historical building Cabildo with the parliament, the 18th century Headquarters of the first government of the country, and the historic mansion of Advisors of Spanish Deputy King.
The avenue of July (Avenida de Julio) is the broadest avenue in the world. In the middle stands a huge obelisk - symbol of the city- 68 meters high which marks the center of the city and is a benchmark of many social events. It strongly reminds me of the similar obelisk located in Washington. We make a brief trip to Avenue Corientes the traditional culture center of the city, where we see bookshops, cinemas, cafes and restaurants. The square in San Pedro del Castillo with the Historical Museum is also very beautiful with banks cinemas, theatres, churches and museums.
We pass the San Martin Avenue with the Independence Square Parliament and the Palace of Justice. In the square, Plaza del Congresso, the Calle Corrientas - the way of theatres – we see the most brilliant theater «Colon», which dates back from 1908. It is located on Avenue Avenita this famous theatre, opera in Buenos Aires, is one of the best theaters in the world in terms of acoustic. This building is a true copy of Opera-Skala of Milan. We admire the decoration and architecture. It is considered one of the four best operas in the world.

The Recoleta cemetery
The aristocratic district Recoleta with mansions and palaces, surrounded by beautiful parks and large tree planted streets are full of great restaurants, bars, coffee shops and expensive apartments. But the Recoleta is more famous for its aristocratic cemetery (Cementerio de la Recoleta).
The cemetery is full of family tombs which are small or large works of art, made by expensive materials, and decorated with statues, works of artists insignia. The most important people passed through the political and social spheres, are buried here. Of course the tomb of Evita Peron attracts more tourists.
Galerias Pasificas
Pleasant surprise also offer us the willing sellers in shops, they know a few Greek words and use them with grace. Some of them confused us with tycoon Onasis! It is well known that Aristotle Onassis started his business from this place after the Asia Minor disaster in 1922. Here, moreover, left and its last breath, his daughter Christina. The fact that they know a little about Greece and Cyprus, fills us with joy.
In the market of Buenos Aires one finds everything. Whatever you buy is much cheaper than in Europe. The heart of Buenos Aires is Microcentro, which stretches south of Florida Avenue. Here, in the central pavement of the city, there are hundreds of shops. The high road pathway Florida (Florida street) is full of people and shops. Here you one can find mainly leather goods, clothing, shoes, art galleries, electrical goods etc.

The striking neoclassical shopping mall Galarias Pacifico, is a major shopping centre which dominates the region. Only in Paris at galleries Lafagiet have I seen a similar decoration in the roof. It was a former railway station. Roads Lavall and Florida with the two promenades are a paradise for those who love shopping. Dancers, musicians, magicians, jugglers, statues imitators fill up the entertainment in the streets. Music and dance are an integral part of the culture of Argentinians.
From San Telmo North of the Plaza de Mayo begins the old, cosmopolitan neighbourhood San Telmo, which is the home of Tango. One of the most beautiful areas of Buenos Aires with neoclassical buildings countless antique shops. The San Telmo today is the heart of the artistic life of the city, since most painters have their atelier.
The entire district, the streets with their old street lanterns, paved and the old mansions, is an ideal backdrop for dozens of dancers who give outdoor performances. The center of San Telmo is the square Dorrego, which hosted the flea market with antiques and old objects, while around framed by elegant shops and cute coffee together young people of the city.
Occupation dog walker (passeaperro)
Dogs seem to enjoy many privileges in Buenos Aires. Nowhere else I saw the specially trained dog walkers (pasea perros), taking them for strolls. Usually they handle 15-20 dogs simultaneously.

Area of the harbour
At night in Buenos Aires is like another city. All the shops areing is locked up, except of course bars, restaurants, and other claps. The night walks completes the charm of the city. In the evening we went for a stroll to Puerto Madero, the port city. After 1990 the restoration and the building of Calatrava bridge the area is an attractive site full of restaurants and clubs.

In the restaurant we ordered the traditional stakes. Note that it is a fact that the Argentinian stakes are considered the most delicious in the world! We tried ‘mate’, the traditional drink and of course the wine.

La Boca
The core of Buenos Aires, founded in 1536 near the old port, was the neighbourhood of La Boca, which means «mouth», the entrance of the harbour. It was named after the first Italian immigrants living here. It is one of the most graphic and tourist districts of Buenos Aires, full of colorful metal houses. It is indeed something different to see vivid various colors with which they are the houses are painted. This tradition wants workers who lived here and worked at the port, to paint their houses with paint of boats which remained from boats. The «Caminito» is a known pathway, since there they organize outdoor exhibitions and artistic performances of Tango. La Boca is the most pictured neighbourhood of Buenos Aires.
We knew that Argentinians are proud and dignified people. We observed this on several occasions. We haven’t met beggars in the streets, despite the poverty that plagues a large part of the people and the appalling living conditions. In the most deprived and poor neighbourhood of the city, Boca, two youngsters have asked us to make our portraits. Others were selling chewing gum and other small things.

Boca JuniorsIn the Boca neighbourhood is located the stadium of the Boka Juniors (Boca Juniors). As we know football represents another national product of the country. (legend football hero Diego Maradona.
Parks
Outside the city we visited the General San Martin Park with a great variety of trees pond, interesting sculptures such as Los Caaballitos de Marly and source called De Los Continentes.

The trip to Buenos Aires is now engraved in our hearts. We almost cried when leaving, having in mind the song ‘Don't cry for Argentina’!

Στ’ αυτιά μου αντιχούσε το γλυκό, γνωστό τραγούδι «Don’t cry for me Argentina»...

Galerias Pasificas

Mediterranean Kiwi,
I'll always remember La Boca neighbourhood and the two youngsters who have asked us to make our portraits.
Regarding the incident in the London bus, I think is just a case of different cultures and life attitudes!
