Beauties of Greece

.
Vikos canyon in Ioannina. The Vikos Gorge ("Loud Voice") is one of the most breathtaking natural sites in Greece and one of the largest and finest gorges in the world.

Pontikonisi island in Corfu (Kerkyra) is home of the monastery of Pantokrator. It is the white stone staircase of the Monastery which gives the impression of a (mouse) tail that gave the island its name: Mouse island (Pontikonisi).

Plastiras' lake - Karditsa. The Plastiras Dam and Lake Plastiras in Karditsa supply water to the plains and the central part of Greece. The surounding area and the scenery is spectcular.

Sarakiniko beach (Milos island). It was named sarakiniko from the myth about Sarakini pirates, who used the place for refuge. The massive white, soft rocks of Sarakiniko make one feel as if they are on the moon.

The palm forest of Vai - Crete. It is a wet, coastal forest and the largest palm forest in Crete.

The Valley of the Butterflies is a unique and a beautiful natural spot in Rhodes Island. It is a small valey with many brooks, pines, plants, colourful flowers and thousand butterflies.

The Fraktos area in Rhodopi, is a typical example of virgin forest. This area is the only one in Greece that is absolutely protected.

Velouxi mountain in Karpenisi, Evritania. Karpenisi is a small town located in a remote area of the Pindos Mountains. The area, Evritania, has been likened to a little Switzerland and with good reason. Majestic craggy limestone mountains tower over rustic villages where steep roofs indicate how snowy winters can be. Karpenissi, or as the locals call this mountain "Velouxi", is a very nice ski resort.

The lovely beach 'Tis Grias To Pidima' is in the popular tourist island of Andros. The name is translated as "The old lady's jump"; it refers to a local myth according to which an old lady committed suicide by jumping of a cliff.

The Red Beach, "Kokini" near Akrotiri, is located in a quitter area but attracts much people. It is the most famous beach of the island of Santorini.

The green island of Lesvos, or Mytilini, is like no other Greek island. It is the third largest of the islands in Greece behind Crete and Evia. Lesbos contains one of the few known pertified forests. This natural monument is a unique site in the whole Europe. On the whole Earth there is a similar one only in Arizona, USA, but that one is quite smaller.

The word Meteora means literally 'hovering in the air' and of course brings to mind the word meteor. What created this rare geological phenomenon is one of the mysteries of nature and there are many theories though they remain theories and none have been proven. But as amazing a marvel of nature as these giant rocks are the buildings on the top of these are a marvel of man and seem just as miraculous and make Meteora one of the most spectacular places to visit in Greece.

Ancient Olympia, Greece

Birthplace of Ancient Olympic Games
By Phivos Nicolaides

Ancient Olympia is located near the city of Pyrgos of Achaia Prefecture, in western Peloponnese, in a tranquil valley between the hill Kronios and the conjunction of the rivers Alphios and Kladeos. Bathed in light and full of green (whatever is left after the devastating fires last year), it rightly attracts millions of visitors every year.

The ancient Olympia with its unique greatness, glorified the greek shining spirit for centuries. The rich traditions, the endless myths and its glorious history are mixed and lost in the mists of time. Although the entire complex of ancient Olympia is today piles of ruins, mute witnesses of the glorious old glamour, they impress us nonetheless. They cause admiration, especially for all those beautiful ideals and the great ideas they represent.

One must imagine that here, the most brilliant performances of the time were organised, the ‘Olympia’, the forerunners of the modern Olympic Games. In the Games, which were held every four years, around August and lasted five days, only free (not slaves) Greeks took part. They included games such as the pentathlon (jump, discus, race, javelin and wrestling), track, wrestling, pankration and soldiers’ running with armour. The athletes contested naked, and the races and boxing matches were called nudist facts. The organisation and general supervision of the ‘Olympia’ were in the hands of the Hellanodics, who were the judges of the games.

The ‘Olympia’ started as a local celebration, a small regional of festival and they eventually gained Panhellenic recognition. The Games had become a link between the colonies with the metropolitan Greece, a centre of attraction and the most important manifestation of national unity of the ancient Greek world. Most importantly, however, they took the form of a great ideal, which dominated the youth of the ancient Greek world for many centuries.
During the Games, the wars between the battling city-states stopped and the «sacred truce» prevailed. As a prize, the winners received a twig wreath from the sacred olive tree of kallistephanos oil tree, which they calletd ‘kotinos’.
The strict principle of the Sacred to preserve the ‘Olympia’ as wreath-crowning and not money-giving ensured the moral supremacy of the ‘Olympia’ as games of virtue and moral.

Race games were organised every four year, in honour of goddess Hera, called ‘Heraea’, in which only women took part. The sanctuary and the Games at Olympia were dedicated to Zeus. The most important and impressive building was the famous temple of Olympian Zeus, inside of which stood the chryselephantine statue of Zeus, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, work of the «sculptor of the gods» Phidias.

Among the sacred buildings and the temples in the area, called Altis (forest). The sacred Altis, just as its name suggests, was green, full of oleasters, plane trees, other trees and wild vegetation. Within the enclosure of Altis there were three temples: Zeus, Heraion and Mitroon.

Over the centuries, the site of Olympia has suffered all kinds of disasters of looting, destructive earthquakes, fires and floods. Fortunately, during the 1875 excavations some unique masterpieces of the ancient Greek art were found, such as the famous Hermes of Praxiteles, exhibited at the Olympia Museum.

One of the first ruins we encounter within Olympia is the Gymnasium and Palaestra. As our guide, Julia, explained, these were the places where the athletes trained before the Games. We stroll in awe amongst the sacred sites of Olympia.

In my mind I reanimate a world of great works and grand ideas, linking the past with the present and illuminating the future. I ponder that this is also the unrepeatable splendour of Olympia. In the Hippodrome, were held chariot races, which were the most glorious events of the Games.

In the official entrance to the stadium and along its wall, there are the pillars of Zanes. The Zanes – the plural of the word Zeus - were sixteen bronze statues of Zeus. These statues were dedicated from the fines paid by those who broke the regulations of the Games, for example, those who were found doped with essential oils(!) had to pay a fine. The fine was to build one of those statues, the ‘Zanes’ which were placed before the entrance to the stadium, as a reminder and emulation to the athletes entering the stadium.
We reach the Pompic street, the road on which the procession with the priests, the Hellanodics, the athletes and the officials went by. I try to imagine the scene, and immediately in my mind the image of this ancient procession is created. Wherever you walk, wherever you look, you see a 'living' part of a life of some former world. Even the stones here speak! I see tourists respectfully bowing to take small stones with them as a souvenir.
In the Echo Archway near the Stadium, with it’s special acoustics, the competitions of heralds and trumpeters were held. I thought that in my ears resonate the voices and trumpet calls. After passing the Crypt, we enter the Stadium, in which the nudist games took place. Entering the stadium we al gasp in enthusiasm. It looks like the apokalypse. The stadium, has a length of 192 metres and a width of 30 metres. Here we can see the starting point, a marble slab for the runners.
To the right and left of the Stadium there is a slope, from which 20-25 thousand spectators could watch the Games. In the south slope we see the ‘exedra’ on which the Hellanodics and the officials sat. Opposite this, we see the stone altar of the priestess of Demeter Chamyne, - the only woman – who could watch the Olympia.

I imagine the Stadium full of people and I hear the voices of the athletes and the crowd. This part of Olympia is the simplest. However, it is the most impressive. It mentally takes you directly to the ancient Games. Associated with a long history, legends and glory, ancient Olympia is an archaeological site of particular interest.
It took one thousand years to complete the entire complex. After the paganism was banned, the Olympia which had been a symbol for almost 12 centuries, was abolished in 393 AC. The institution which became a symbol since 776 BC and had seen nearly 12 centuries of edge was abolished.
Thanks to the vision of the French Pierre de Coubertin, these Games were revived in Athens in 1896, with the modern international Olympiads. The great ideals developed, the high spirit that prevailed in the measure of the beautiful, the good and the harmony, make up the panorama of ancient, immortal Greek spirit, emerging and resonating in every corner of Olympia. Having all these in mind, this visit turned into a pious pilgrimage.
