The Holy Theological School of Halki, Turkey

 Snapshots by Phivos Nicolaides
The Holy Theological school of Halki, established in 1844 is located in Heybeliada,  the second largest of the Princes' Islands in Istanbul, in the Sea of Marmara, Turkey. (Photo: The Theological School of Halki at the top of the Hill of Hope).
It was the main school of theology of the Eastern Orthodox Church's Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople until its closure by the Turkish authorities in 1971. (Photo: The entrance of the Holy Theological School of Halki).

The seminary was housed on the site of the ruined Monastery of the Holy Trinity. The Holy Theological School of Halki was established to meet the educational needs of the Patriarchate of Constantinople as well as of the Orthodox Church in general.
All the buildings except for the chapel were destroyed by an earthquake in June 1894, but were rebuilt and inaugurated in October 1896.

Many patriarchs, bishops, and former teachers of the school are buried on the grounds.

The facilities include the Chapel of the Holy Trinity, dormitories, other buildings and the school's library with 120,000 books journals and manuscripts.
Numerous Eastern Orthodox scholars, theologians, priests, bishops, and patriarchs graduated from Halki, including Patriarch Bartholomeos I.
The students at Halki included not only a large number of native born Greeks, but Eastern Orthodox Christians from around the world, giving the school an international character.
The large Naval Cadet School overlooks the jetty to the left as you get off the ferry.
There are two interesting pieces of architecture on the grounds of the school. One is Kamariotissa, the only remaining Byzantine church on the island, and more importantly the last church to be built before the conquest of Constantinople.
The other is the grave of the second English Ambassador to be sent to Constantinople by Elizabeth I of England, Edward Barton, who chose to live on Heybeli to escape the bustle of the city.
Arriving at the small harbour of the island.

To the right of the jetty lies the town with its bars and cafés, and many lovely wooden houses. (Photo: Popi with Chryso and Phivos Kyriakides strolling in the jetty).

The only motorized vehicles permitted on the island are service vehicles (ambulance, fire, police, and the like).
The monastery attracts tourists from all over Greece,Turkey and from around the world.
Halki is a beautiful small island with a picturesque old town and the Holy Theological School being the landmark, making it a joy to explore.
The island with its fascinating history full of beauties, architecture, and holy sights.
