Nicosia Cicily and Nicosia Cyprus

Η άλλη Λευκωσία - Nicosia…

Web address:  The other Nicosia…
Recently, on 8-9 March 2012, international news TV channel CNNI, in a detailed report ahead of the meeting APOEL - Real Madrid for the Champions League quarter finals, incorrectly mentioned as the place of origin of the Cypriot team the town Nicosia in Sicily, causing several negative, embarrassing and ironic comments.

This rather bizarre fact may, unfortunately, be indicative of the limited awareness by certain global media of the location of Cypriot cities and, probably, by implication of the very location of the island of Cyprus and that is why, it is hoped, that this recurring problem would have been already remedied by now by the competent state authorities.

At the same time it is also true that very few Cypriots know about the existence of the Sicilian city - bearing the same name as the Cyprus capital in its Latin version - Nicosia.

This short feature aims, first, to give the Cypriot public a brief general description of this town, which shares several cultural elements – in addition to the name - with our capital, and second, to raise the issue of a possible twinning of the two homonymous cities by upgrading the already existing co-operation agreement signed back in 2000.

First of all, we shall put on the map this small provincial Sicilian town of just 15,000 people.

The town belongs to the province of Enna in NE central Sicily and is located about 150 km from the island's capital, Palermo, 100 km from the city of Catania on the east coast and 170 km from the city of Messina in the northeast end of the island. Its geographical coordinates are - latitude 37 14 North, and longitude 24 45 East.

Nicosia rises rather steeply from the central valley axis of Val Demone, over to the four overhanging high hills (Cappuccini, Monte Oliveto, Roccapalta and Castello), which are covered by pine forests on the southern slopes of  the Nebrodi range, at an altitude ranging from 700 to 800 metres above sea level.

The town's name is probably connected in some way with that of its patron, Saint Nicholas, whose adoration is very common among the Greek communities, alluding to its Hellenic origins, possibly during the period of Byzantine domination of Sicily. Another version connects the town’s name to family members bearing the name Nicosia, who were expelled for political reasons, by the Lusignan rulers of Cyprus sometime during the13th cent. AD and who, according to some sources, eventually settled in that part of central Sicily.

The town has ancient origins and a long history, since it was originally founded by the Hellenes and then conquered by the Romans. Today's settlement developed during the Byzantine period, in the 6th cent. AD, first under the site of the castle, in an inaccessible location, and then expanded - during the Arab domination and later the Normans – down to the fertile valley. The Normans promoted mass migration of families from the provinces of Lombardy and Piedmont in northwest Italy, bordering France, which explains why the local dialect contains many words from the Italo-French dialect of those distant regions.

The town’s climate is Mediterranean in character with enhanced continental features because of the distance and relative isolation from coastal influences and this fact is reflected in lower temperatures in winter and higher in summer than the coasts of Sicily. In addition, because of its elevation at 720m a.s.l. temperatures are reduced accordingly while rainfall increases. More specifically, the average temperature of the town in January, which is the coldest month, plunges to around 7 Celsius while in August, the hottest month, rises up to 25 Celsius. The annual rainfall is around 640 mm. For the sake of comparison the corresponding climatic data for Nicosia, Cyprus is 10 C, 29 C and 340 mm.

The main occupations of the inhabitants of this quiet, provincial Sicilian town include the processing of the high quality agricultural and livestock products of the surrounding region. Of particular note is the local olive oil and, foremost, the wine from the award winning wineries of Cantine while of the livestock production the most famous product is Sagredel Castrato, a kind of delicious beef. In addition, the town has developed crafts in the traditional fields of woodcarving and handmade woven baskets. Its resources also include the spas of sulphurous thermal waters found in the area and the mining of salt from the local salt mines.

In recent decades the town has become a regional tourist hub for both Italian and foreign visitors, since the whole town can be considered a living museum. Of special interest is the fact that almost all buildings date back to previous centuries (especially to the period from the 15th to the 19th cent.). It is evident from the number of buildings that the town's population was larger in previous centuries with a significant reduction being observed due to urbanization and internal and external migration, mainly during the 19th and 20th cent.

The main town attractions include:
o The ruins of the Norman castle, offering a great view of Monti Nebrodi and Etna volcano to the east, of Monte Altesina Madonie and the range to the west, and of Monte La Guardia and Rocca Cannone to the south. o The 14 cent. town cathedral of San Nicola di Bari, its patron saint, has a richly decorated portal, a huge bell tower with triple and double-lancet windows, and hosts the artwork of "the Crucifixion " dating back to the 17th cent. drawn by monk Umile Petralia . The magical pulpit to the right is a crafted marble work by Antonelli Gagini constructed in 1566. But perhaps the most striking feature of the cathedral is its wooden painted ceiling, covering over 300 square meters, and probably painted by many artists at different times, with geometric motifs, landscape scenes, portraits, medals and letters with bright depictions from everyday life as well as mythological and sacred themes.
o The church of Santa Maria Maggiore, also boosts a magnificent marble pulpit another marvellous piece of work by artist Antonello Gagini. This church was originally built in the 12th cent. , but collapsed in the massive landslide of 1757 along with over 400 town homes, and its reconstruction in the current form took over a century .
o The ruins of the Norman castl, at an altitude of 814 m in the Monte San Giorgio, and its imposing bridge with the sharp angled arches.

This short feature aspires to contribute to increasing the awareness of the Cyprus public of this picturesque and historic town of Nicosia, located in Sicily.
Concluding, I would like to emphasize again that the identical name in itself and the almost parallel historical and cultural development of the two towns (Hellenism, Roman period, Byzantine period, Arab domination etc.) are sufficient grounds to justify, I believe, the twinning of the two cities - Lefkosia (Nicosia) of Cyprus and Nicosia of Sicily - and as a consequence, I suggest to the municipal council of our capital to seriously consider this issue.
