The town was granted in the past, a license to trade of salt, and -the salamander it is her symbol - which you can see carved on many of the houses.
It's a beautiful small town with medieval stone buildings in the small streets of the old cute town.

I didn't know about Cognac the region, and Cognac the city. I knew only about the famous brandy.

Thanks for the valuable information and for the lovely pictures of the various attractions in the Cognac area.

Lovely pictures and account of a city I knew nothing about.
Love the look of those "houses", and interesting that it's the home of the French Navy too.

I always become more educated after reading about the cities you visit. Since today is Bastille Day, it would only make sense to feature a French city. I've been to Paris but not this one. It looks lovely.

Blessings,
Debbie

Wonderful pictures and post. I was here with a group of friends in 2004 and we opted for the Martell tour even the boat crossing for the other tour seemed appealing. This holiday introduced me to the Charente drink of Pineau which is difficult to find in my country and is a mixture of brandy and white wine.

How beautiful it all looks!
In my small town here in Oregon we are having a Renaissance Faire this weekend. People will imagine themselves to be in medieval times. In Cognac you really are there!

A amizade
