Goteborg, Sweden

Beautiful and friendly city
By Phivos Nicolaides

Of course a big asset of a place is people. The feeling that I got is that the citizens of Goteborg not only love their place, but they also do care for it in all respects. The care of public places, the cleanliness and the beautiful architecture is dominated everywhere.

The traffic runs smoothly, without horns and traffic jams, even if there is no an underground. The residents always polite and willing to help us, whenever we asked for directions in the city.

Goteborg, is located on the west coast of Sweden. It’s the second largest city of the country, with a population of about half a million inhabitants. It was founded in 1621 by the Swedish king Gustavus Adolphus II.

Over the years the small town was developed into an important centre for trade and commerce and today is a prosperous and a beautiful city.

Being in a strategic position Goteborg was one of the most well-defended fortresses in Northern Europe at the end of the century. The city was surrounded by walls and bastions. Three of the fortresses outside the city still stand.
Goteborg’s port, has been always acted as Sweden´s gateway to the west. The city was constructed by Dutch specialists at building and created the canal and street network, the kind wanted. The large square, the current Gustaf Adolfs Torg, next to the Large Canal is impressive.

Shipping and trade dominated the industry in Goteborg for a long time. It had been an important trading centre since the 12th century. In 1960s the city was one of the world's largest shipbuilding and repair centres. Now days, the city is home of large and world famous companies such as Volvo, SKF and Ericsson.

There is a distinct maritime atmosphere, which can be seen even in the decoration of the streets.

It’s not a small neither a big or a noisy city. However, it has everything. It’s an exciting place with many historic sights, very good museums and so many other interesting places to visit.

Respect for the environment is exemplary. The love for culture is proved by the numerous cultural institutions, art galleries, museums and the stylish sculptures, statues and monuments that decorate the city. The city is a centre for diverse cultural events.

In Goteborg Opera with its unusual building, opened in 1994, you can attend opera, musical and ballet. The fantastic collections at Goteborg Museum of Art are impressive. Photography, videography, and sound recording are not allowed inside the Museum exhibit areas.

The Museum of Art is an immersive, highly interactive experience and it’s a must see for all visiting tourists to Goteborg.

Universum, Sweden’s national science discovery centre, is another place where you can explore the rainforest, see sharks and watch fascinating experiments.
The Museum of World Culture a place brings the world’s cultures alive from all over the world. The Maritime Centre is the world’s largest floating maritime museum. Worth to visit. Among other interesting places to visit is the Goteborg City Museum with an excellent collection, giving a glimpse at the city’s history.

Scandinavia’s largest flower and garden exhibition is located here. Gotenbοrg Botanical Garden is one of the foremost of its type in the world.
Liseberg the greatest amusement park in Scandinavia attracts thousands of people every year.

Our trip to Goteborg’s unique archipelago with small, beautiful islands and picturesque fishing villages was a magnificent experience. Restless sea, beautiful stark rocks, cliffs, houses and the boats were a source of fascination. We enjoyed the short cruise very much, despite the cold weather. This kind of cruise with magnificent views is highly recommended.

Shopping, dining and entertainment in modern Goteberg is another great experience. Shopping in the city is vibrant and offers an excellent range- from small designer boutiques to the well known NK department store.

The city also has one of Europe’s biggest indoor shopping centres- Nordstan mall with 175 shops under one roof- which attracts 33 million visitors every year.
The people are elegantly dressed and the designers from Goteborg offer beautiful creations for men and women. Avenyn the most fashionable street in Sweden, is full of fashionables shops, stores, bistros, pubs and nightclubs.

This is the place to stroll, make shopping, eat and have fun. The city centre is compact and you can get almost everywhere on foot or by a short ride on a tram.

Scandinavia’s most enjoyable city has the best entertainment and the best food in the whole of Sweden’. Clubbing and nightlife is extensive and varied till the early hours in the morning.

The cafes, bars, restaurants and small shops in old Haga, the town’s oldest suburb (from the 17th century), along Linnegatan (one of Goteborg’s best-kept secrets) offer a fascinating atmosphere.

Of course t the big asset of the place is people. The residents always polite and willing to help us, whenever we asked for directions in the city.
The cold North was a warm hug, a pleasant revelation. Goreborg, tack, thank you!

Jamanfou.

Philip and Popi, So nice to read all the comments of peoples opinion of Sweden, I almost want to cry. Im so happy to hear they like my country! I LOVE my country, even if its cold in the winter. When the darkness comes I make me and my family some nice warm hot chocolate and light maby 20 cosy candles. Then we curl up in the sofa under a tonne of blankets and talk about funny things, play games or read a book aloud.
The pictures are beautiful!
You are great with the camera.

Best regards to popi and you and your sons!

Phivos Nicolaides said...

The dong. There is a harmony in this beautiful city, between, people, animals and nature! Nothing in excess!

Phivos Nicolaides said...

Natassa.
