Alfortville is a commune in the Val-de-Marne department in the southeastern suburbs of Paris, France. It is located 7.6 km from the center of Paris. The commune of Alfortville was created on 1 April 1885 from part of the commune of Maisons-Alfort.

It is one of the French towns that has changed the most in the 20th and 21st centuries. Nantes derives its name from the Namnètes, a Gallic tribe who made it their capital. It became a commercial centre under the Romans. The Normans, after pillaging the town, occupied it from 834 to 936.

Verne was born on 8 February 1828, on Île Feydeau, a then small artificial island on the river Loire within the town of Nantes (later filled in and incorporated into the surrounding land area). Jules Gabriel Verne (February 8, 1828 – March 24, 1905) was a French novelist, poet and playwright, particularly known for his adventure novels and his profound influence on the literary genre of science fiction. He is best known for his novels «Journey to the Center of the Earth» (1864), «Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea» (1870) and «Around the World in Eighty Days» (1873). Verne was writing about air and space travel before airplanes were practically invented and before the means of space travel were devised. He is the second most translated author in the world (after Agatha Christie).
