In Andalusia in the footsteps of the Sierra Nevada mountain range and the river Jennil and it’s branch Darro in the distance, cooling the surrounding area, stretches one of the largest historical centres of Spain, the beautiful Granada. In one version the name originates from the Arabic word «karnata» which means «the hill of foreigners». In another, from the Spanish word «gkrananta» meaning pomegranate, perhaps because many pomegranates thrive in the region.

The city of Granada was founded by Arabs (Moors) in 756 AD who dominated from 710 AD to 1492 अड़. In 14th century they built part of the Red Fort, known as Alampra (Al Hambra), the summer palace of Generalife during the period of the Nasrit dynasty, a wonderful group of exceptional beauty, one of the great Moorish monuments all over the world. The word Alampra (Al-Hambra) in Arabic means «red». It was the capital of the kingdom of Nasrit dynasty, the last Arab kingdom in Spain. From this palace that belonged to the Cordoba region which was ruled for years by Arabs princes. It was their base and the last bastion, which resisted for almost two centuries. In 1492 was occupied by Catholic kings who annexed to the kingdom of Spain. King Fernando of Aragon married Isabel heiress to the Crown of Castile and joined the kingdoms into one.

The external appearance of the palace deliberately deceives somebody, compared with the internal luxury inside. The princes did not want to provoke the citizens, who were living in slums and in many surrounding caves only a few steps around the palace. So, the unsuspected citizen, and the current visitor can not imagine how rich it was inside the palace, until it reveals its true face. The best material at the time was built in conjunction with the perfect work, created a fantastic work all together, which astonishes us with its dazzling beauty.

The marble fountain with 12 lions decorates the centre of Lions fountain. An inscription engraved on the side, writes: «Look at the water, and look at the tank and you will not be able to distinguish if it is the water or the marble which runs». And indeed the clear water which flows on the marble look one thing. The source of life, precious water for the Arabs was something they appreciate very much, since they originated from dry deserts.
In the wings of the department of the Princess luxury was obvious. Golden decorations and precious stones left me speechless. Our guide translate for us a poem that is engraved in the wall that says: «Anyone who goes in and looks up is stunned, and anyone who looks at the floor imagines that the moon has left its house and came to stay here».
Without thinking, I look up and I am dazzled. I look then on the floor and it seems to me that I see the colour of full moon!

All the walls of the palace decorated with small rectangular tiles, with unparalleled scripture। Some are written lyrics, praising Mohammed. We proceed to the lovely hall of ambassadors, the balconies and windows offer a wonderful view of the city. The impressive hall of the throne which is next to it, is decorated with fine Arabic art. The huge dome is dressed with carved cedar in an incredible symmetry. The illumination created by the windows is stunning.

After we submit our respects to the throne, we go out for a stroll in the gardens with the beautiful fountains. We admire the «shadow gardens of paradise» with the name Generalife. The variety of flowers, shrubs and trees is big and coolness created is unparalleled. Here every year takes place the International Festival of Music and Dance.

Full of admiration from what we have seen, we go down to the city. We end up to the famous cathedral Capilla Real of Granada which is filled with artwork and fabulous treasures. In the royal chapel of the cathedral the kings Issabela and Ferdinand are buried. Many churches were built by Moors craftsmen after the regaining of the city by Christians in the unique rhythm Mudejar. The monument in the square Alcaeceria, near the cathedral, shows Columbus offering Isabel treasures brought from the colonies.
Granada with the legends and History, captured our admiration. We walk in the beautiful old city with the nice buildings, untouched by time. The small stores with goods provoke us to purchase souvenirs, to remember the beautiful moments we spent in majestic Granada.
As it gets dark we stroll down the picturesque old quarter Moorish Almpraisin with its narrow streets and gypsies dwelling caves in Sakromonte. In a small club we enjoyed the passionate dances and songs of gypsies. Some students of the Center for Hellenic Studies at the local university, gave us a lot of fun with their beautiful songs on their guitars and sold us their CD. Even now I can still hear the echoes in my ears of the beautiful song «Granada».
