Carnival is a 4-day celebration. It starts on Saturday, and ends on Fat Tuesday. Carnival Sunday is seven weeks before Easter Sunday. All holidays are calculated according to the date of Easter. Carnival occurs 47 days before Easter. The first competition between the schools began in 1932, in Praça Onze, a contest sponsored by World newspaper "Sportivo", the journalist Mário Filho. Due to the impact, "Jornal O Globo" newpaper organized the contest the following year. Only in 1935 the City of Rio decided to organize the event.In these first decades, the samba schools did not have any structure and organization as today. Were organized simply, with few members and small floats. The competition between them was not the most important, but simply the joy and fun.

The samba schools work the whole year to be judged in a single presentation at the Sambadrome. Five thousand paraders rehearse on the court, with samba dancers, the master of ceremonies, a flag, highlights, wards and also the participants of the orchestra and the band. On the big day, everything must be in perfect order and harmony.

A committee is formed by a maximum of fifteen people and can be men, women and children.

The opening wagon is where it all begins. It is there that the school sets its symbol highlighted; Wards are groups of the same fantasy that lies between the floats. A samba dancer crossing the end of the avenue can lose up to two pounds weight.

The floats and props are an important part in the parade. The floats include most of the plot. In so-called cheeses, are the main highlights of the party.

Highlights parade alone on the floor or on the floats. Wear costumes representing characters in the plot. The children's wing is optional and is formed on average by two hundred of them.

The master of ceremonies and flag-bearer carry the banner of the school using luxurious costumes that can weigh up to forty pounds.

The band, with about 350 members, is lined with instruments guided by the master. The instruments used are: drum, tambourine, shaker, reco-reco, snare drum, agogo, opossum, repinique, war chest and deaf first, second and third marking.

The official interpreter is responsible for singing on average 65 times the theme song during the parade. It is accompanied by backup singers, but he or she is who determines the progress of the samba.

The dancers are responsible for filling the spaces left by the drummers. Samba with lots of charm and sensuality.

Some schools have queens, princesses and godmothers band, beautiful women who are chosen in the artistic or competitions in the community.

Στην αρχή δεν είχε το σημερινό χαρακτήρα του διαγωνισμού, αλλά απλά ήταν μια γιορτή διασκέδασης και χαράς δειλά – δειλά πρώτα στους δρόμους και αργότερα εγκαταστάθηκε μόνιμα το 1984 στο γνωστό Σαμποδρόμιο.

Πέντε χιλιάδες ατόμων παρευλαύνουν μπροστά από την κριτική επιτροπή, με τον τελετάρχη τους επικεφαλής, το σημαιοφόρο, τους χορευτές σάμπα, το άρμα και επίσης τους συμμετέχοντες για την ορχήστρα και τη μπάντα. Τη μεγάλη μέρα, τα πάντα πρέπει να είναι στην εντέλεια και αρμονικά τοποθετημένα για τη μεγάλη παρουσίαση και παρέλαση.

Unidos do Porto da Pedra
Περνούν μπορστά απο την κριτική επιτροπή παρουσιάζοντας δικές τους πρωτότυπες χορογραφίες σε σχέση με το θέμα του άρματος. Η κριτική επιτροπή αποτελείται από το πολύ δεκαπέντε άτομα και μπορεί να είναι άνδρες, γυναίκες και παιδιά.

Paraíso do Tuiuti
Πρώτα παρουσιάζεται το άρμα. Είναι εκεί που η κάθε σχολή σάμπα θέτει το σύμβολο που τονίζει. Ακολουθούν οι υπόλοιπο και χορευτική ομάδα. Ένας χορευτής μέχρι να περάσει μπορστά από την κριτική επιτροπή, μπορεί να χάσει μέχρι και δυο κιλά βάρος.

Οι πλωτήρες και τα σκηνικά του άρματος ποτελούν σημαντικό μέρος στην παρέλαση. Οι πλωτήρες περιλαμβάνει είναι σχεδο τόσο μεγάλοι όσο και ένα οικόπεδο.

Caprichosos de Pilares
Παρέλαση μπορεί να κάνουν εκτός από το άρμα και στο πάτωμα. Φορούν στολές που αντιπροσωπεύουν χαρακτήρες με τη θεματολογία του άρματος. Η πτέρυγα των παιδιών είναι προαιρετική και διαμορφώνεται κατά μέσο όρο από διακόσια από αυτά.
