Thessaloniki, Greece

The jewel of the north
Snapshots by Phivos Nicolaides
Thessaloniki, (also known as Salonika or Saloniki) the princess of Thermaikos gulf is the capital of Macedonia province in Greece. It is the second largest city after the capital city of Athens.

During the Byzantine era, Salonica, as it was then known, was the second city after Constantinople (Istanbul), remaining so until its sacking by Saracens in 904.

It has a population of more than 1.000.000 inhabitants and it is one of the oldest cities in Europe.

Its history dates back more than 4000 years. The city was founded in 316 B.C. by Cassander, king of Macedonia, and named it after his wife, Thessaloniki, sister of Alexander the Great.
During the last 20 centuries Thessaloniki is the capital of Macedonia in the north, which was the realm of Alexander the Great.
The city's most famous landmark, the White Tower was originally built as part of the city walls.

It is honorarily called the Symprotevousa (lit. co-capital) of Greece, as it was once called the symvasilevousa (co-queen) of the Byzantine Empire.

Thessaloniki is Greece's second major economic, industrial, cultural and political centre.

It has some of the most beautiful beaches and has some of the finest hotels and best restaurants in northern Greece.
Home to the Thessaloniki Film Festival and the International Trade Fair and hosts many cultural events.

Its diverse history has sprinkled Thessaloniki with ruins of ancient Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, Balkan, and European origin.

The main squares are Platia Elefterias and Platia Aristotelous, both on the waterfront.

A walk to the waterfront is a must!

Beautiful parks connected with the waterfront walkway.

The city has a heritage of early Christian communities, particularly the renowned monasteries of nearby Mount Athos.

The seafront walkway provides a romantic setting for all ages, at all times...

The most romantic feature in the city is the waterfront promenade, stretching for some kilometres along the seaside.

The city is a perfect base from which to explore the magical surrounding landscape...

Romantic charm.

Romantic holidays are not for lovers only.

The city offers plenty of options for shopping with high fashion and upmarket branded goods aplenty.

Every corner of the city breathes youth and vitality.

A beautiful modern city.

The young generation of the country on move.

The easy riders of the city...

Beauties everywhere making the city even more charming.

The pink bus waiting for the ladies.

Strolling the seafront walkay day and night!

Thessaloniki is a city of young people.

Endless walks of all ages.

Oh! my dog! What a lovely cutie dog.

Enjoying themselves and feeling good and happy after a round of shopping!

Thessaloniki is also known for its exceptional nightlife with the famous Ladadika quarter.

With our old and good friend, Sakis Kotsakis from Salonica.

Our good friend Cheryl Chatzis (in the middle) receiving us at Thessaloniki International Airport "Macedonia".

@ Gvendalen. Privet, Hi Elena! I thank you for your kind comment!

@ JamanFou. Λίγο το 'χεις Ιωάννα να έρχεται για σένα στο αεροδρόμιο ο πρώην 'πρωθυπουργός' της Ελλάδος;
Τι να ΣΕ πω!!!

@ ELENI.
