Zwonitz, Germany

Zwonitz, a tranquil and beautiful corner of Germany
Snapshots by Phivos Nicolaides
Germany stands out by the variety of different landscapes from north to south and some truly breathtaking scenery.

A country of outstanding natural beauty, Germany has a wide variety of landscapes; the mountains, the prairies, lakes and rivers with many national and provincial parks to protect the habitats.

Although I have been many time is Germany, I have to admit that I didn't really know much about this lovely small city of Zwonitz.

It was therefore, a pleasant surprise the exploration of this tranquil corner of Germany.

A small city with a great personality...
It's December and it's Christmas time is already in the city...

Charming Christmas markets with romantic atmosphere, well established music and theatre festivals.
The atmosphere and the lovely spirit of Christmas everywhere.
A town crier was usually an officer of the court who makes public pronouncements. In Zwonitz these town criers used to watch over the town between the hours of sunset and sunrise. They were first mentioned in 1650 and basically did the jobs which nowadays police and fire brigade would do.

Today these men in their blue uniforms are a tourist attraction. They walk through the town centre in the evenings and warn people in restaurants and pubs not to stay up too long. They sing their typical songs in Erzgebirge dialect and sometimes tell (dirty) jokes. (Picture: Statue of town crier).

Zwönitz is a town in the district Erzgebirge, a hilly region in the Free State of Saxony, Germany, close to the border of the Czech Republic.

There is evidence that the first settlers arrived in the area around the year 960 AD and the first German farmers in 1160 AD. At that time the complete area of the Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains) was completely wilderness, covered with dark forests called "Miriquidi".

When silver, tin and other sorts of ore were found in the area the population increased and more villages and towns were built.

The silver mines’ operation played a major role and a significant contribution in the local economy. Mining was the main source of income for most families in the region.

The gradually technological innovation brought further prosperity to silver mines and to the towns like Annaberg, Schneeberg or Freiberg which became rich through mining.

Zwonitz once upon a time was a mining town, too. Iron was found here. After the decline of mining in the 17th century new industries were developed. Textiles, paper and shoes were produced in Zwoenitz.

Zwoenitz has been most famous in recent years for innovations in computer operating systems, software, and IT.
This city of Zwoenitz has close to 12,000 thousand inhabitants. It consists of the original town and seven surrounding villages and it covers an area of 53 square kilometres.
Gorgeous German young girls from Zwonitz. Cultural heritage has been fabulously conserved in many towns and villages across the country.
Among others, interesting sights are the churches, the town hall, and several mills at the little river Zwoenitz.

Zwoenitz is a small town but attracts tourists throughout the year.

O group of visitors from Nicosia, Cyprus!
Katrin ready to show us the city center.

Katrin’s daughter Lucy just looks so cute.

Fanny, Marie and their friend in an absolutely sweet pose.

Beautiful and established neighbourhoods.

For a city of its size, there is a great variety of restaurants, cafes and bars. We couldn't miss the Greek restaurant "Athena"!

A happy city for smiling people.

The Matthes-Enderlein-Gymnasium, an established educational institution in Zweonitz.

People in the Zwonitz are very polite and friendly. The people of Zwonitz are recognised as the City's greatest asset.

The surrounding villages of natural beauty. The mountains and the hills are typical of the countryside.
Exceptional attractive landscapes, gorgeous villages.
Part of the adventure is getting to these wooden houses built on stilts on riverbanks.
Walks through this picturesque scenery.
Village building with beautiful architecture still preserved.
Natural beauty some of the highlights in the region.

It looks fabulous, peaceful and calm...

Nothing makes us feel as inspired and relaxed as movement of water.

Beautiful little village! It has a lot of charm. I enjoy seeing the homes in the countryside with the steep, peaked roofs. We don't see that very often here.

I was scrolling through your blogs and they all seem very interesting. Are you a teacher? Me too, but I try to keep a low profile. And what type of author are you? I've also written and published something but only a little. Have you really been to all these places? That's great. And what was that conflict you were involved in in the 70's? It was all in Greek. You seem like a very interesting person. :-)

I have been travelling since I was a college student and every year I try to travel at least 2-3 times in a different country. I consider travelling as a tool for knowledge.
