'Captain' Sapper, born navigator, without compass, into the waves of the sea!

During the last 2-3 years, of the summer months, at the Skoutari beach in Protaras (Cyprus) at times we had seen with my wife a beautiful spectacle that we liked. A nice dog proudly standing in front of the bow of a canoe, which was steered by the owner. Scrolling with courage in the calm waters of the sea, with the nice dog watching the horizon and counting the waves. It seemed to enjoy the journey in full. Man, animal and nature in an excellent harmony. We enjoyed in our turn the unexpected beautiful scene until it was lost from sight.

Last Saturday, the familiar scene was repeated but upgraded on a nice boat, roaming around in the open sea. It was passing in front of us, as if he knew that we watching him. The boat stopped in a remote part of the beach, which was not far away. Swimming we reached the boat of the cute ‘captain’ Sapper. The well experienced 'navigaton', was smelling saltness, wagging his tail, to welcome us. Surely, he realized that our visit was for him.

We agreed with the polite British owners of the boat Jane and Robert Aiken to meet the next day for a few snaps of photos and here are the results.

Αφιερωμένο εξαιρετικά στον Σκύλο-'καπετάνιο' Σάππερ!

Ο ταξιδιάρης 'Καπετάνιος' Σάππερ στην πλώρη, καμαρωτός και εξοικειωμένος με τη θάλασσα.

Τα τελευταία 2-3 χρόνια, τους καλοκαιρινούς μήνες, στην όμορφη παραλία Σκούταρη στον Πρωταρά (Παραλίμνι) μερικές φορές, βλέπαμε με τη γυναίκα μου ένα ωραίο θέαμα που μας γοήτευε. Ένα συμπαθητικό σκυλάκο να στέκεται καμαρωτό μπροστά στην πλώρη ενός κανό, που οδηγούσε ο ιδιοκτήτης του. Βόλταραν με κουράγιο στα ήρεμα νερά της θάλασσας, με τον συμπαθητικό σκύλο να αγναντεύει τον ορίζοντα και να μετράει τα κύματα. Φαινόταν να απολαμβάνει το ταξίδι στο έπακρον. Άνθρωπος, ζώο και φύση σε εξαίρετη αρμονία. Απολαμβάναμε κι εμείς με τη σειρά μας την ανέλπιστη, όμορφη αυτή εικόνα μέχρι να χαθεί από τα μάτια μας.

Το περασμένο Σάββατο, ξαφνικά πρόβαλε ξανά το γνώριμο σκηνικό με τον καπετάν σκυλάκο, αναβαθμισμένο όμως, πάνω σε ένα ωραίο σκάφος, να περιφέρεται στα ανοιχτά της θάλασσας. Πέρασε σχεδόν από μπροστά μας, λες και ήξερε ότι τον παρακολουθούσαμε.

Το σκάφος άραξε σε μια απομακρυσμένη μεριά της παραλίας. Δεν ήμασταν και πολύ μακριά. Κολυμπώντας πλησιάσαμε το σκάφος του χαριτωμένου κάπτεν Σάππερ. Το ξεφτέρι αυτό στην ‘πλοήγηση’, που μύριζε αλμύρα το κορμί του κούνησε την ουρά του, για να μας χαιρετίσει. Σίγουρα, κατάλαβε ότι η επίσκεψη μας ήταν γι’ αυτό.

Συμφωνήσαμε με τους ευγενικούς Άγγλους ιδιοκτήτες της βάρκας Τζέην και Ρόμπερτ Άικεν να βρεθούμε την επομένη για μερικές αναμνηστικές φωτογραφίες και ιδού το αποτέλεσμα.

Ο γενναίος Σκυλο-καπετάνιος Σάππερ του Blue Seagull και το υπόλοιπο πλήρωμα, Robert, Jane, Suz και Zena. Ο Μπέιλις, το σκυλάκι μπάρκαρε κι αυτό ως ναύτης. Ταξίδεψε και περιπλανήθηκε στη θάλασσα του Πρωταρά.
