Taj Mahal, Agra, India

The memorial of love

By Phivos Nicolaides

The city of Agra in northern India, once the capital of the empire of the great Mughals during the 16th and early 18th centuries, is located 204 km south of New Delhi, in the state of Uttar Pradesh. Tourists from all over the world visit Agra to adore the city’s monuments including the unique beauty of the Taj Mahal, India’s most famous architectural building. The monument houses the cenotaph of queen Mumtaz Mahal.
The Taj Mahal a combination of Indo-Islamic and Persian architecture, is one of the world’s most beautiful structures and is regarded as one of the eight wonders of the world. It was built by the fifth Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan in the memory of his beloved wife, queen Mumtaz Mahal, a Persian princess after her death. Mumtaz Mahal, whose name means 'Chosen One of the Palace', died in 1631 after giving birth to their 14th child. The name "Taj Mahal" was derived from the name of Mumtaz Mahal and means "Crown Palace".
The construction of the tomb began in 1632. More than 20,000 workers for 22 years worked to complete the whole complex. It was a very ambitious and expensive project at a cost of millions rupees. The mausoleum is a part of a vast complex comprising of a main gateway, an elegant garden, a mosque (to the left, west), a guest house (to the right, east), and several other buildings.

The master architect was the Persian Ustad Isa who was also a mathematician and an astronomer. Expert and skilful craftsmen were also employed. The excellent calligraphic inscriptions displayed in the geometric friezes on the white marble, belong to Amanat Kha. Most of the text is short verses from the Qur'an emphasizing eschatological themes, particularly the Day of Judgment.

The main building material such as white marbles of top quality, red stone, yellow and black marble, were brought in from all over India and central Asia. A fleet of 1000 elephants transported these materials to the site. Some precious stones, gold and silver were sent by various kings abroad and other prominent officials of the empire.

The Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore describes the monument as rising above the banks of the river “like a solitary tear suspended on the cheek of time” ( "A teardrop of love, frozen in marble on the cheek of Eternity").

Situated near the banks of the River Yamuna, mausoleum was built entirely of white marble and is looks like a jewel on a raised platform surrounded by four tall minarets. In any time of the day and in any weather condition the colours change and the scenery is different.

Behind the tomb is the river and therefore an open area leaving the background to the sky with its magic colours that, through their reflection, change the view of the Taj. Inside are delicate mosaic works and marble walls adorned with intricate patterns of inlaid precious stones.
The monument’s entire architectural concept reflects the beauty of a woman (the empress). For example the rectangular base of Taj is in itself symbolic of the different sides from which to view a beautiful woman.
As some experts put it, Taj Mahal is India’s tribute to the grace of womanhood, the Venus de Milo of the East. It is considered as a glorious symbol of eternal love.

The main gate is like a veil to a woman’s face which should be lifted gently on the wedding night. Αs one stands inside the main gate of Taj, his eyes are directed to an arch which looks like a frame of the Taj.
Taj Mahal garden

The Persian style of Taj gardens, with emphasis on flowers, fruit and birds were designed by Ali Mardan Khan. These gardens were based on geometric arrangements of nature.

As the number four is considered the holiest number in Islam, all the arrangements of Taj garden are based on four and or its multiples. So, the garden is divided into four parts, with two marble canals studded with fountains crossing in the centre. No doubt the usage of number four was applied for building four minarets and four gates as well. The large garden contains four reflecting pools divided in four sections. The allegorical nature of the garden with the four canals clearly symbolizes the four rivers of Paradise mentioned in the Holy Qur'an.
Τhe waters of the ornamental pool reflect the silhouette of the Taj Mahal. The elegant trees of the Taj garden are either that of cypress (signifying death) or fruit trees (signifying life).

After the emperor Shah Jahan express his will to build another similar tomb (a black one) for himself, in the other bank of the river, he was deposed by his son and imprisoned in the Great Red Fort for eight years. During his imprisonment in the imperial palace at the Red Fort, the only thing he asked, was to have a view of the Taj. After his death his daughter buried him in the Taj next to his wife.

No words can express the beauty of this magnificent monument, with its aesthetic perfection and the ingenious, harmonious architecture. It is a universally admired masterpiece of the world's heritage. In 1983, the Taj Mahal became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

While looking and admiring the immeasurable beauty of every single part of the monument complex ("the epitome of love"), I thought of the reason behind this construction, and my visit was immediately turned into an adornment.

Thanks to our excellent tour guide Mr. Prakash Gupta, a spiritual personality, our visit to Taj Mahal was a great experience and broaden our understanding about other cultures and civilizations.
