Saint Petersburg: Russian's northern capital

The city was founded by Tsar Peter I of Russia in 1703. It was the capital of the Russian Empire for more than two centuries (until 1918 after the Russian revolution of 1917). It is Russia's second largest and Europe's fourth largest city after Moscow, London and Paris. The city has 4.6 million inhabitants, and over 6 million people live in its vicinity. Saint Petersburg is a major European cultural center, and an important Russian port on the Baltic sea.

Russia's political and cultural center for 200 years, the city is often referred to as the "Venice of the North" or the Paris of the East. Unharmed by the 1930-50s period of Stalinist reconstruction, downtown St. Petersburg is crowded with splendid palaces, impressive historical monuments, tree-lined avenues and beautiful bridges.

The blue and white Smolny Cathedral is one of the most fabulous works of Bartolomeo Rastrelli (the creator of the Winter Palace, the Grand Catherine Palace in Pushkin, the Grand Palace in Peterhof, and other major landmarks). The historic centre of Saint Peterburg and related groups o monuments constiture a UNESCO world heritage site. Arts Square was planned by Carlo Rossi, an Italian who spent most of his life working in Russia and is considered by many to be a Russian architect. Rossi also built Arts Square's most prominent building - the Mikhailovsky Palace, which today houses the Russian Museum.

Η πανέμορφη και σαγηνευτική μητρόπολη που γοητεύει, η Αγία Πετρούπολη λάμπει σαν κόσμημα μέσα στο φως.

Η πόλη ιδρύθηκε από τον Τσάρο Πέτρο τον Α' στα 1703. Υπήρξε για πάνω από δυο αιώνες (μέχρι το 1918 μετά τη Ρωσική επανάσταση το 1917) η πρωτεύουσα της Ρωσικής Αυτοκρατορίας. Είναι η δεύτερη μεγαλύτερη πόλη της Ρωσίας και η τέταρτη στη σειρά της Ευρώπης, μετά τη Μόσχα, το Λονδίνο και το Παρίσι. Η Αγία Πετρούπολη είναι από τα μεγαλύτερα πολιτιστικά κέντρα της Ευρώπης και σημαντικό λιμάνι στη Βαλτική θάλασσα.

Πολιτικό και πολιτιστικό κέντρο της Ρωσίας για 200 χρόνια, η πόλη ονομάζεται και ως "Βενετία του Βορρά" ή το Παρίσι της Ανατολής. Οι Ρώσοι την αποκαλούν και "Πρωτεύουσα του Βορρά".

Ο με άσπρα και γαλάζια χρώματα καθεδρικός ναός είναι έργο του Βαρθολομαίου Ραστρέλι, σημαντικά άλλα έργα του οποίου συγκαταλέγονται τα Χειμερινά Ανάκτορα, το Μέγα Παλάτιον της Κατερίνας στο Πούσκιν, το Μέγα Παλάτιον στο Πέτερχοφ και άλλα).

Το ιστορικό κέντρο της πόλης συμπεριλαμβάνεται στον κατάλογο της ΟΥΝΕΣΚΟ με τα μνημεία της παγκόσμιας πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς. Η Πλατεία Τεχνών έχει σχεδιαστεί από τον Ιταλικής καταγωγής αρχιτέκτονα Κάρλο Ρόσσι ο οποίος εργάστηκε και έζησε πολλά χρόνια στην Αγία Πετρούπολη. Ο Ρόσσι σχεδίασε το πιο σπουδαίο κτίριο της Πλατείας των Τεχνών - το Παλάτι το οποίο σήμερα είναι Μουσείο.
