In the land of Magna Graecia (Great Greece)

Closer to Africa than to Rome, the Mediterranean's largest island was colonized first by the Greeks in the eighth century B.C. Outsiders ruled uninterrupted until Italy's unification in 1861.

Sicily's varied history includes many conquerors: Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans and other French dynasties, various Spanish dynasties, and the Italian Garibaldi dynasty in the 1800s.

Taormina is a charming hillside town on the east coast of Sicily, Italy and is one of the island's main tourist resorts. The small town of Taormina is one of the most popular Mediterranean hot spots.

Is perched on a terrace overlooking the sea and has a delightful medieval character. This beautiful Sicilian town is set on a lush hillside that spills into the Mediterranean.

Over the Ionic sea on a rock cliff rises the city of Taormina, one of the most visited cities in Sicily. For centuries travelers from all over the world come here to see the archeological sites and to view the sea and the snow-covered Etna, together with a fantastic town scape.

A major attraction is the Greek amphitheater, resting on a hillside and offering extraordinary views of Mount Etna and the Mediterranean.

The impressive Greek Theater, that is amazing for its spaciousness, its extraordinary acoustics and its stunning location.

This Theater though originally built in the Hellenistic era, it was completely reconstructed in Roman style in the 2nd century A.D by the Romans and used for gladiatorial shows.

The Theater in Taormina is the second-largest in Sicily after the one in Siracuse.

Further evidence that the Theater is of Greek origin is in the well-cut biocks of Taormina stone (similar to marble) below the scene of the Theater; these are a typical example of the ancient Greek building technique.

The theater is divided into three main sections: the scene, the orchestra and the cavea.The scene is opposite the cavea and is obviously where the actors used to perform.

Magnificent panorama (the bay of Naxos and Mount Etna). Monte Etna is Europe’s largest active volcano. The slopes soar up to over 3.296 meters and the flanks of the mountain are covered with scores of cones and craters. From its top we can admire the Gulf of Catania.

The majestic panorama, combined with a spectacular view of Etna and the Calabrian mountains, renders this hollowed out hill a natural stage, as well as a stage for natural beauty (Bay of Naxos). Naxos, founded in 734 BC, was the first Greek colony in Sicily. Ancient Naxos was then destroyed, and the center that rose in its place in the Middle Ages as a fishermen's village. Now it is a popular seaside-resort, famous for its beaches, the Ionian Sea, and its small, but bustling fishing port.

Porta Messina, restored at the beginning of the 19th century, was named Port Ferdinanda when it was opened in 1808 by Ferdinand IV of Bourbon.

Porta Catania on the other hand is the end result of various changes and restorations.

Ταορμίνα και Νάξος Ιταλίας

Στον κόσμο της Μεγάλης Ελλάδας...

Στη Σικελία τα θαυμαστά δημιουργήματα του Αρχαίου Ελληνικού πολιτισμού εκπέμπουν ακόμη το φωτοβόλο μήνυμα του πολιτισμού. Οι ναοί και τα άλλα οικοδομήματα της Αρχαίας Μεγάλης Ελλάδας, ορθώνονται ακόμη βουβοί μάρτυρες ενός ένδοξου παρελθόντος, που μεταλαμπαδεύτηκε στην Ευρώπη και δημιούργησε ως συνέχεια του ελληνορωμαϊκού πολιτισμού, τον σύγχρονο Ευρωπαϊκό πολιτισμό.

Κάθομαι αποσβολωμένος και χαζεύω αχόρταγα το υπέροχο τοπίο που απλώνεται μπροστά μου. Κλείνω τα μάτια και φαντάζομαι τους πρώτους Έλληνες που αποβιβάστηκαν εδώ με τις αποσκευές, του ασύγκριτου ελληνικού πολιτισμού.

Αναλογίζομαι το μέγεθος του εγχειρήματος με τα δεδομένα της εποχής και η συγκίνηση, μου προκαλεί έντονη συναισθηματική φόρτιση. Πώς να μην ταρακουνηθεί η καρδιά και ο νους, βλέποντας το μεγαλείο του αρχέγονου πολιτισμού μας, να πρωτοστατεί και να κυριαρχεί εκτός Ελλάδος.

Στην πανέμορφη περιοχή της μικρής Ταορμίνας, το φυσικό περιβάλλον, το προστατευόμενο πάρκο της Αίτνας, όπου υπάρχουν κρατήρες, τα καταπράσινα δάση, δίπλα στα γαλάζια νερά της Μεσογείου, συνθέτουν ένα ασύγκριτα ειδυλλιακό τοπίο.

Η πόλη της Κύμης είναι η αρχαιότερη ελληνική αποικία της Ιταλίας και η Νάξος η πρώτη ελληνική αποικία της Σικελίας. Έπαιξε σημαντικό ρόλο στον αποικισμό του νησιού και στην εξάπλωση του ελληνικού πολιτισμού. Την ίδρυσαν Ευβοείς από τη Χαλκίδα κατά το δεύτερο μισό του 8ο π.Χ. αιώνα, πιθανότατα το έτος 734 π.Χ.

Το βουνό Αίτνα με το ομώνυμο ηφαίστειο είναι το μεγαλύτερο ενεργό, της Ευρώπης. Το ύψος του είναι 3.296 μέτρα και στη φωτογραφία πάνω φαίνονται οι χιονισμένες βουνοκορφές του.

Είναι εκπληκτικό να αντικρίζεις αυτό το τοπίο που σε μαγεύει με την ομορφιά του. Είχα διαβάσει και ακούσει ότι το μέρος αυτό είναι από τα ομορφότερα της Ευρώπης, αν όχι του κόσμου. Όταν έφτασα εκεί, απλώς το επιβεβαίωσα αμέσως…

Η αρχιτεκτονική και η φυσική τοποθεσία του με την παραλία της Νάξου να φαίνεται από κάτω δημιουργεί φαντασικό, φυσικό σκηνικό!

Η Μεσαιωνική πόλη της Ταορμίνας έχει τη δική της πλούσια ιστορία.

Οι παλιές πύλες της πόλης με μια Βυζαντινή εικόνα ως διακόσμηση στην είσοδο. Η εικόνα φυλάσσεται στον Καθεδρικό ναό της πόλης.

Η Πύλη Μεσσίνα αναπαλαιώθηκε στις αρχές του 19ου αιώνα.

Στα απολαυστικά δρομάκια της πόλης, στην οδό 'Ρωμαϊκού Θεάτρου΄ που οδηγεί στο Αρχαίο Ελληνικό Θέατρο.

Η τουριστική κίνηση από όλα τα μέρη του κόσμου είναι ασταμάτητη.

Ο Σάββας και η Άννα δεν χωρταίνουν το τοπίο...

Τα παλιά σπίτια έγιναν πανέμορφα σύγχρονα μαγαζιά ή κέντρα.

Ο Αρχαίος Ρωμαίος και η σύγχρονη Ιουλιέτα...

Αυτόν τον τόπο, δεν μπορείς εύκολα να τον ξεχάσεις. Είναι δύσκολο να σβήσει από τη μνήμη σου... Οι ομορφιές και η ιστορία του μένουν ανεξίτηλα χαραγμένες στο μυαλό και την καρδιά.

Η όμορφη Ταορμίνα, το περίλαμπρο Αρχαίο Ελληνικό Θέατρο της, με τη σαγινευτική θέα και την πανέμορφη αρχιτεκτονική και η αξεπέραστη Νάξος, με έχουν κυριολεκτικά μαγεύσει.
