"Manhattan has been compelled to expand skyward because of the absence of any other direction in which to grow. This, more than any other thing, is responsible for its physical majesty." ~by E.B. White

"Empire State Building" I am an American boy, standing up to the world. I sleep the city sleeps. We dreamthe riveter's dream, held island-fast.I wake to taxi alarms.I am a 102-stop elevator ride to heaven. . .

. . . I am ten million bricks of unshakable faith.
I capture imagination at its peak.
I hugged King Kong, he hugged me back.
I look down on Broadway for a work of art,
the Fulton Fish Market for a slice of life,
United Nations Headquarters for a little peace. . .

. . . It's lonely up here without my twin brothers, the World Trade Center Towers.Wait here on my doorstep, Central Park, while I look over Harlem.I am an American boy, face to face with the world."~by J. Patrick Lewis

In a Square of Times Square"Evidence suggests a clock and its fast handis the most fitting tribute for continuity. Times Square (light-lit night) . . .

. . is the backdrop for our story, just as Edenas an orchard is one narrativebeginning. In that one, the snakeas a tempter announces time's end. . .

. . . The Square sits in a city that is less a setidea and more a disdain for sameness. Times Square was always changing. Of course truth was always one side . . .

. . . of certainty. She stops and looks up and seesthe scenic depiction of a drama-charged lifeon the Times Square billboard above, where an actress is asking a moment, . . .

" . . . while I walk on the sunny pavement of Greenwich Village, down Manhattan, clear winter noon, and I've been up all night, talking, talking, reading the Kaddish aloud, listening to Ray Charles blues . . . "~by Allen Ginsberg from Kaddish (I)
. . "~ από τον Allen Ginsberg από Kaddish (I) "

"The city, for the first time in its long history, is destructible. It used to be that the Statue of Liberty was the signpost that proclaimed New York and translated it for all the world. Today Liberty shares the role with Death".

White

I love this post, Margaret! It's so fun that Phivos surprised you by posting it!
Marvelous photos of my favorite city (it's where my husband and I were married...right there at the Municipal Building, and my grandfather decades ago had his office at 217 Broadway - the building still stands!).

Hi Cheryl! Yes, New York is an alive, electric, exciting city! I am so glad that I live just on the other side of the Hudson in New Jersey and can visit often! Thank you for visiting! Best, Margaret

Hi Janie! You're right: there's no place like New York! It just buzzes and hums and makes you feel so alive! I'm glad you liked the photos! Thanks for visiting! Best, Margaret

Hi Lydia! I feel like a star! It was so generous of Phivos to do this!
I didn't know you had such ties to New York! You must come back again!
I saw Finian's Rainbow on Broadway last night and thought of you! It was beautiful! They sang "How Are Things in Glocca Morra?" three times! Major stars: Jim Norton as Finian, Kate Baldwin as Sharon, Cheyenne Jackson as Woody, and Terri White, a famous singer! The staging was glorious! We had dinner at Carmine's right next door! Best, Margaret

Thank you again, Phivos! I feel very special. I followed your link to your New York trip and was very humbled. Some incredible places were shown that I missed: St. John the Divine Cathedral, Grand Central Railway Terminal, South Street Seaport, and those two photos of the Statue of Liberty were suberb!
Right now, there is a fabulous show of Paris by Karine at http://karinefarjon.blogspot.com., if you would like to invite her here. We'll always have Paris! Heartfelt thanks, Margaret

Hi Janie's World! Thanks for the compliments! You'll have to come again! New York is so exciting and alive! There's nothing like a Broadway show or a stroll down Fifth Avenue! Thanks for dropping by! Best, Margaret
