The House of Mother Mary, Ephesus, Turkey

The House of Mother Mary in Ephesus, Turkey

While we were in Ephesus last August we have visited the “House” of Mother Mary, Theotokos (Mother of God) where she is supposed to spend her last years until her Assumption/ Dormition.

According to a legend, Virgin Mary after the Resurrection of Christ was brought to Ephesus by the Apostle St. John who came in the area to spread Christianity. This is based mainly on the traditional belief that John came to Ephesus combined with the biblical statement that Jesus consigned her to John's care.

A small Byzantine chapel stands on top of a hill, 7 km south to Ephesus, the “House” of the Virgin (Meryemana "Mother Mary's House"), is located on Mt. Koressos (Bülbüldağı, "Mount Nightingale") approx 9km from Ephesus, in a nature park.

The sacred site maintains its holiness for both Christians and Muslims as well. The chapel entirely made of stones, has two rooms, one for Christians and one for Muslims, since both religions view Virgin Mary as an important holy person.

On August 15 (the Feast of the Assumption of Mary) each year, Catholic, Orthodox and Muslim clergy conduct a service together at the shrine, one of the rare occasions this happens anywhere.

The building was only 'discovered' in 1881 by a French priest, following the description made in the visions of a German nun in 1812.

The remnants of the discovered structure have been dated to 6th - 7th centuries, with parts of the foundation and coal found on the site dated to the 1st century AD. (Photo: Popi on the way to the House).

The chapel is the result of a restoration work completed in 1950, built on top of original remains.

The Roman Catholic Church has never pronounced on the authenticity of the house, for lack of scientifically acceptable evidence.

Though it is an official pilgrimage site, the records of the Ephese council, that took place in 431 AD in a Basilica dedicated to Mary do not mention any Mary’s house. Moreover, all legendary writings about the death of Virgin Mary spot it in Jerusalem. (Photo: Denise Moura and Popi Nicolaides).
This site had long been a place of pilgrimage for local Orthodox Christians. Since 1892 the House of the Virgin has been a Catholic pilgrimage site. It was restored on 1897. (Photo Denise Moura from Rio, Brazil).

Αt the exit of the church area τhe "Water of Mary", a source to be found with curative properties.
Prayer wall on the way to the House of the Virgin. Below the chapel, there is a wall where thousands of people have attached prayers written on pieces of paper.

Some sources express doubt about the association of this site in Ephesus with the Virgin Mary, stating that "the tradition of Mary's residence in this city of Asia Minor arose only in the twelfth century. The universal tradition among the Fathers of the Church places her residence, and thereby the locus of her Dormition in Jerusalem".

Hundreds of pilgrims pass before this statue every year especially around Easter it gets very crowded.
