Machu Picchu, Peru

The spectacular, magical construction of Incas
Then on the ladder of the earth I climbed
through the lost jungle’s tortured thicket
up to you, Macchu Picchu.
High city of laddered stones,
at last the dwelling of what earth
never covered in vestments of sleep.
In you like two lines parallel,
the cradles of lightning and man
rocked in a wind of thorns.
Pablo Neruda.  ('The Heights of Macchu Picchu')

Discovered in 1911 by the American explorer Hiram Bingham, Macchu Picchu is an Inca stronghold in the Peruvian Andes near the modern city of Cuzco.
Standing 2,430 m (7,970 ft) above sea level, in the midst of a tropical mountain forest in an extraordinarily beautiful setting, Machu Picchu was probably the most amazing urban creation of the Inca Empire at its height.

The ruins of Machu Picchu are divided into two main sections known as the Urban and Agricultural Sectors, divided by a wall. The Agricultural Sector is further subdivided into Upper and Lower sectors, while the Urban Sector is split into East and West sectors, separated by wide plazas.
Machu Picchu is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Α growing number of tourists every year visit this worldwide popular monument.
The natural scenery which dominates the trip to the Machu Picchu area is especially impressive because of the balance between the natural beauty and the Incas' gorgeous architecture.
Getting to Machu Picchu was a real ordeal and too tired to do it in one day. It took over two hours, through a monotonous desert.
I thought that the road to Machu Picchu would be all the way by train. Much later I learned that there were several types of access, depending on everyone's pocket. Can be even made directly by helicopter and landing at the central courtyard of Macchu Picchu by train Cusco-Aguas Calientes,
The train was much more comfortable than the van. In side of the train it was the Vilcanota River and in the other, vast deserts or mountains with few pines.
The journey was one hour and 20 minutes to Aguas Calientes, a small town near Machu Picchu. Others choose to walk, which lasts about an hour.
From here we took a bus to take us to Machu Picchu. I was very intrigued to find out how much it would take though the bending road.
We traveled through the famous zig zag roads. I was afraid of getting dizzy, but nothing happened.
We took the narrow paths to go to the site. The sun was strong and the heat was just as unbearable.
Between high mountains, suddenly, appeared a grand spectacle. I couldn’t believe my eyes: Machu Picchu before us. That was amazing. It was as real as the colors that are mixed between heaven or blue, white clouds and green mountains. It was as if  it had suddenly opened the horizon to something huge.
The physical environment full of people of all nationalities were perceived as a silent group of mountains, turning the stones and the walls of what was a monumental Inca civilization in something with an aura of mystery and idyllic landscape.
I felt a vague magical feeling, the strength and the attractiveness, as if something moves the city and giving life to her.
Visitors say that they have a supernatural influence in this area, a mystical, esoteric, as a spiritual presence that dominates the scene.
No one can say that for the Incas Machu Picchu was a sacred place, however, to visitors is considered as if they are coming to a shrine.
We left the place with a particular feeling of being in communion and contact between the nature and the spirit.

Machu Picchu has always interested me. Very often I watch an Youtube video showing the train journey. Very beautifully narrated and I felt as if being there with you people. There is one more interesting thing in Peru/Bolivia, the floating island on the lake Titikaka.

I would love to see it but I don't care for a bus ride on narrow winding roads. The helicopter sounds better, but I know it must cost a fortune. I guess I could always walk up in three days. Thanks for the beautiful journey.

Your post about Machu Picchu is totally lovely! I so want to see this place someday, but at least your photos and words have given me a mental journey. To begin with the poetry of Neruda was sublime! And you write poetically too, with lines like these: It was as real as the colors that are mixed between heaven or blue, white clouds and green mountains. and The physical environment full of people of all nationalities were perceived as a silent group of mountains, turning the stones and the walls of what was a monumental Inca civilization in something with an aura of mystery and idyllic landscape.

The last picture of you with his arms around you will maybe be one of your favorite pictures of all time? Everything about it expresses love, peace, excitement, joy and that sense of magic you described.

Angel
