Delphi - Greece

Treasures of Ancient Hellas : Temple of Apollo
Snapshots By: Phivos Nicolaides

A city of wondrous artistic achievements and grand athletic spectacles during the flowering of Greek culture in the first millennium B.C. Delphi is best known, however, as the supreme oracle site of the ancient Mediterranean world.

Assenting with slow paces towards Apollonio temple, I am stunned considering the history of this place. Crossing the holy street, the exact path along the ‘Sacred Way’ that was followed by ancient pilgrims, we meet stylish constructions (structures), galleries and other places. Left and right the holy path there were hundreds of status other valuable items and treasuries (small temple building that were filled with offerings and dedications to god Apollo.

According to legend, the serpent Python was the ancient guardian of Delphi's Castalian Spring before he was killed by Apollo. Python was the son of the Greek goddess Gaia, «Earth». And significantly, the name Delphi is related to ‘delphos’, «womb» and may indicate archaic veneration of Gaia, Grandmother Earth, and the Earth Goddess at the site.

Ancient Delphi is an archaοlogical site of the Sanctuary and Oracle of the God Apollo, son of Zeus and a modern town in Greece on the south-western spur of Mount Parnassus. Delphi was the site of the most important oracle in the classical Greek world. Ιt was a major site for the worship of the god Apollo.. Every four years athletes from all over the Greek world competed in the Pythian Games.

Located amidst breathtaking scenery in central Greece 180 kilometers from Athens was built onto a hillside, on the slopes of Mount Parnassus. The town and ancient site have a spectacular view down to the Gulf of Corinth and of the surrounding area filled with olive and cypress trees.
At its peack Delphi became associated with Greek intellectual ideals evidenced by the mottos of wisdom such as «Know Thyself», «Nothing in Excess» (Everything In Moderation), inscribed on the walls of Apollo's temple.

The Οracle of Delphi was a spiritual experience whereby the spirit of Apollo was asked for advice on critical matters relating to people's affairs or the state matters. Questions were put to the Pythia, or priestess/priests governing the site to make a request of Apollo who 'channelled' the spirit of the God. Pythia, who seated on a tripod above a deep crevasse, would pronounce her prophesies while the priests wrote them down and translated them to the people.

The Temple of Apollo

The Doric Temple of Apollo seen today at Delphi dates back to the 4th century BC.
Approaching the temple, one passes the Stoa of the Athenians (dating mid-5th century BC), built against the retaining wall that supported the temple. The temple would have been an imposing site, with its massive Doric columns. Those that remain still exude the strength appropriate to a deity of Apollo's stature:

For the ancient Greeks, Delphi was considered the geographical centre of the world, the omphalos (navel), the meeting point of two eagles dispatched by Zeus from the ends of the universe to find the centre of the world. A Roman copy of this omphalos (meaning 'centre of the earth' to the ancient Greeks) stone, is displayed in the Delphi Museum. According to a legend the original stone, now lost, was a large meteorite fallen from the sky in deepest antiquity.

The entrance to the Altis (the sacred area), at the lower end of the sanctuary, marks the start of the sacred way, a switchback path that leads up to the temple. Here, the stone altar to Apollo, where offerings were made, appears before the entrance to the temple.

The Tholos temple, Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia

Nearby is the Sanctuary of Athena, Pronaiais, also known as Marmaria which includes the Tholos. The archaeological site also includes the excellent Delphi Museum.

The Tholos a round structure with Doric columns, was built in the early 4th century BC. is probably the most widely recognized building on the site because of the color of the marble.
As the reputation of the oracle at Delphi grew, by the 7th century BC the Sanctuary achieved Panhellenic fame as a major oracle shrine within the Greek world and beyond. Delphi became a centre of a 12 member federation called ‘Amphictyonia’ a sort of league between the small city- states.

The 4th-century-BC theater with a gorgeous view of the Sanctuary and the countryside, accommodating 5,000 spectators of Delphi, just above the Temple of Apollo, is one of the best preserved in Greece. The stone seats for spectators are a later, Roman addition. Greek stadiums (including the one at Olympia) generally provided merely a sloping, grassy area for those viewing the events.

Before entering Apollo's Sanctuary and consulting the Oracle, at the Castelian spring the pilgrims had to wash themselves. The crystal clear water still flows.

Further above the temple is the large Stadium which was famous for its great chariot races. The Pythian Games held every four years at Delphi were one of four Panhellenic games held in ancient Greece. Held in honor of Apollo, they attracted competitors from all over the Greek world. Originally, they were centred around the talents of music and poetry. But soon after, athletic competitions were added as well. The winners of the Pythian Games received a laurel wreath.

Many treasury buildings were erected in the Sanctuary of Apollo to house votive offerings of grateful pilgrims. These were donated by the cities to thank the Oracle for helpful advice. The most notable of these treasuries and offerings lined the sacred way lies the reconstructed Athenian Treasury, dating from 5th century BC. The treasury includes a wall covered with Greek inscriptions and musically annotated hymns to Apollo.

Continuing up the Sacred Way, additional treasuries, including one for Corinth, would have been visible the remains of numerous treasuries, small structures with columned facades, used to house the offerings of cities. Just below the temple lies the base for the Naxian sphinx, dedicated around the mid-6th century B.C.

The Museum

The on-site Delphi Museum exhibits attractive displays of a wide variety of artifacts from Delphi, most of which were extravagant gifts from far-away cities. Though little is left on the site, museum houses some excellent pieces from the Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic and Roman periods. Among them is the famous Charioteer, a classical masterpiece (large bronze statue) created around 478 B.C. which is the star exhibit of the Museum. This piece of great art was a gift from the wealthy Sicilian city of Gela.

Delphi was designated a Unesco World Heritage site in 1987. Apollo's Sanctuary in Delphi is one of the most popular archaeological sites in Greece. This remarkable place attracts a million visitors a year. Visiting Delphi is an enriching and an unforgettable experience.

Thank you Mediterranean kiwi. Perhaps your are right because of the location of Delphi. Acropolis in Athens however is something completetly different.

The actual ancient site in Delphi is a Delphi Museum. When we visited there we felt like living in the history. The guide was very good having detailed knowledge about the place and gave a tremendous insight to the museum. The artifacts were outstanding in their craftsmanship.
