Barcelona, Spain

The hot city of Spain
By Phivos Nicolaides

Barcelona, the Catalan capital is a major Mediterranean port and the second largest Spanish city with a population of about 2 million inhabitants. Once, Hans Christian Andersen called it the "Paris of Spain. This is not accidental, because the city is dominated by art, fashion, beautiful architecture and refined taste.

The name of the city appears as a version, to derive from the name of Carthage General Chamilkar Barca, who founded the Bartsino in 230 BC. This, was followed by Roman rule until the 5th AD century. The Visigoths took over from the Romans until 713 and then the Moors. Followed by the dominance of the French king Charlemagne in 801, which granted the privilege of autonomy to Catalonia. In 1137 Barcelona incorporated in the Kingdom of Aragon. The two competing Spanish kingdoms of Aragon and Castile were united in one, the kingdom of Spain in 1479.

With a rich history, great cultural heritage, beautiful architecture, interesting museums, great shopping malls and significant nightlife, the capital of Catalonia is an attraction for many people.

The natural beauty, the diversity of the city and its fiery Mediterranean temperament of its inhabitants make an explosive mixture that makes it very attractive.

The Catalans do not see themselves as belonging to the other Spaniards. They be different from others, as an elite with established artists and intellectuals. They are proud of their rich cultural heritage. Even the language is different with its own idioms. In Spanish, Barcelona is pronounced as Barthelona.

The attractions are numerous.

The beautiful architectural buildings of the city, the museums, the galleries and the exhibition spaces are attractions in themselves.

Barcelona emerged as one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe during the 1990s.

It's a beautiful city, full of markets, shops, museums and churches, and great for walking around.

Barcelona is today an important cultural centre and a major European tourist testination.

The Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (MNAC) or Catalan National Art Museum is housed in the magnificent palace overlooking the fountains of Montjuich and the Plaza Espana.

Pieces of art publicly in a beautiful square. The central square is Plaça de Catalunya of dimensions comparable to those of the Vatican in Rome.

It’s a city in motion, constantly reinventing itself.

At the bottom of La Rambla beyond the Columbus Monument is the bustling of Port Vell. This was formerly the old port of Barcelona but today is an ultra modern leisure zone with bars, restaurants, shopping arcades, the Barcelona Aquarium and an Imax cinema.

The city also boasts many green spaces and beautiful parks.

The heady mix of Gothic monuments and contemporary skyscrapers is accompanied by a bevy of world-class museums. The "Vila Olimpica" one of the two highest buildings of 150 meters high.

Barcelona attracts tourists from all over the world. The Barcelona City Hop-on Hop-off Tour.

In 1992 Barcelona hosted the Olympics Games.

The games made the city known all over the world, and increased the tourist flow.

Here, past merges with future in an effervescent present.

Barcelona has a long tourist season April to October. The weather should be good enough for sightseeing.

Bienveue, welcome to Barcelona!

Το 'Παρίσι της Ισπανίας'. Άδικα, άραγε;
