The Christmas holiday period lasts 12 days in Greece and there are many customs associated with this.

Christmas lights and decorations everywhere! It was absolutely beautiful. Greeks use to decorate Christmas Trees Christmas ships.

Thessaloniki, (also known as Salonica or Saloniki) the bride of Thermaikos gulf is the capital of Macedonia province in Greece.
Η Θεσσαλονίκη (γνωστή και ως Σαλονίκη) η νύφη του Θερμαϊκού, είναι η πρωτεύουσα του νομού της Μακεδονίας.

It is the second largest city after Athens. It has a population of more than 1.000.000 inhabitants.
Είναι η δεύτερη μεγαλύτερη πόλη στην Ελλάδα μετά την Αθήνα. Έχει πληθυσμό πέραν του ενός εκατομμυρίου.
On Christmas Eve, young boys and girls go from house to house and sing carols to the drum beatings and tinkling triangles. In return, they receive sweets, small gifts or money.
Την παραμονή των Χριστουγέννων παιδιά πηγαίνουν από σπίτι σε σπίτι και ψάλλουν τα κάλαντα, με τα τρίγωνα. Σε ανταπόδοση παίρνουν γλυκά, δωράκια ή χρήματα.
Thessaloniki, is one of the oldest cities in Europe.
Η Θεσσαλονίκη είναι μια από τις πιο παλιές πόλεις της Ευρώπης.
Aristotelous Square has a wonderful view to the sea and is the heart of the city. All big events take place here.
Η πλατεία Αριστοτέλους έχει πανέμορφη θέα προς τη θάλασσα και είναι η καρδιά της πόλης. Όλες οι σημαντικές δραστηριότητες πραγματοποιούνται εδώ.
Christmas spirit and beauties everywhere making the city even more charming.
Χριστουγεννιάτικο πνεύμα και ομορφιές παντού, κάνουν την πόλη ακόμη πιο όμορφη.
Thessaloniki is considered as a gourmet city, with excellent local specialities and cheap-and-cheerful ouzo taverns.
Η Θεσσαλονίκη θεωρείται πόλη του καλού φαγητού, με υπέροχες τοπικές σπεσιαλιτέ και ωραία ουζερί και ταβέρνες.
Greece's second city, Thessaloniki, is also one of the country's most trendy and dynamic places.
Η δεύτερη μεγαλύτερη πόλη της Ελλάδας, η Θεσσαλονίκη είναι μια από τις πιο δυναμικές και μοδάτες πόλεις της χώρας.

Traditional salep, a beverage, made from the roots of a plant under the name Orchis (Orchis mascula, the family of Orchidodon).
Παραδοσιακό σαλέπι, ένα ποτό που φτιάχνεται από τις ρίζες ενός φυτού, με το όνομα Όρχις (Orchis mascula, της οικογενείας των Ορχιδωδών)..
A series of high-rise buildings giving the city its own charm.
Σειρά από ψηλά κτίρια που δίνουν μια ξεχωριστή χάρη στην πόλη.
Thessaloniki enjoys a rich contemporary cultural life besides its rich cultural past. The city hosts various cultural events and annual festivals.
Η Θεσσαλονίκη έχει μια πλούσια σύγχρονη πολιτιστική ζωή εκτός από πλούσιο πολιτιστικό παρελθόν της. Η πόλη φιλοξενεί διάφορες πολιτιστικές εκδηλώσεις και ετήσια φεστιβάλ.
The flea market, a type of bazaar, where inexpensive or secondhand goods are sold or bartered.
Η υπαίθρια αγορά, ένα είδος παζαριού όπου, πωλούνται ή ανταλλάσονται φθηνά ή μεταχειρισμένα είδη.

Buying local seasonal products.
Αγορές τοπικών προϊόντων εποχής.
Smelling the amazing fresh fruits and products which are arranged so beautifully ready to be sold.
Μυρωδιές από φρέσκα φρούτα και άλλα προϊόντα, τοποθετημένα τόσο όμορφα, έτοιμα για πώληση.
There are two main food markets. The section of nuts, with a great variety of incredibly fresh and tasty flavoured nuts.
Υπάρχουν δύο κύριες αγορές τροφίμων. Το τμήμα των ξηρών καρπών, με μια μεγάλη ποικιλία από εξαιρετικά φρέσκα και νόστιμα σε γεύση ξηρούς καρπούς.
 
Do not miss to taste the  traditional tasteful "syropiasta" and home made "glyka koutaliou" sweets!
Μην παραλείψετε να δοκιμάσετε τα παραδοσιακά 'σιροπιαστά' και τα σπιτίσια γλυκά κουταλιού!
Thessaloniki loves sweets and you will be surprised from the number of patisseiries and the variety of the sweets offered!
Η Θεσσαλονίκη αγαπά τα γλυκά και θα εκπλαγείτε από τον αριθμό των ζαχαροπλαστείων και την ποικιλία των γλυκών που υπάρχουν!
Gorgeous seasonal flowers.
Πανέμορφα εποχιακά λουλούδια.

And of course if you are in Greece during Christmas time, don't forget to taste the traditional vasilipota cake and tsoureki sweet.
Και βέβαια όταν είσθε στην Ελλάδα τα Χριστούγεννα, μην παραλείψετε να δοκιμάσετε την παραδοσιακή βασιλόπιτα και το τσουρέκι.

I am reading previous posts after a holidays break - this one is really amazing, I loved the city on the pictures. I was there as a kid, I esp. remember the food markets. I would love to come back one day
