The Goulandris Museum of Modern Art in Andros Cyclades

Μουσείο Σύγχρονης Τέχνης Γουλανδρή στην Άνδρο Κυκλάδες
On the 28th of July 1979 the Basil and Elise Goulandris Foundation inaugurated the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chora, capital of Andros and birthplace of Basil P. Goulandris. The two founders wished to establish a small contemporary art museum which would be designed and outfitted according to latest museum standards, with a view to house international exhibitions.
Στις 28 Ιουλίου 1979 το Ίδρυμα Βασίλη και Ελίζας Γουλανδρή εγκαινίασε το Μουσείο Σύγχρονης Τέχνης στη Χώρα, πρωτεύουσα της Άνδρου και γενέτειρα του Βασίλη Π. Γουλανδρή. Οι δύο ιδρυτές επιθυμούσαν να ιδρύσουν ένα μικρό μουσείο σύγχρονης τέχνης το οποίο θα σχεδιαζόταν και θα εξοπλιζόταν σύμφωνα με τα πιο πρόσφατα μουσειακά πρότυπα, με σκοπό να φιλοξενήσει διεθνείς εκθέσεις.
In July 1986, the museum launched its new wing and over the years this new section has hosted numerous international art exhibitions and has successfully showcased the works of legendary artists of the stature of Picasso, Matisse and others, as well as exhibitions of works by the well-known Greek artists Bouzianis and Galanis.
Τον Ιούλιο του 1986, το μουσείο εγκαινίασε τη νέα του πτέρυγα και με τα χρόνια αυτό το νέο τμήμα έχει φιλοξενήσει πολλές διεθνείς εκθέσεις τέχνης και έχει παρουσιάσει με επιτυχία έργα θρυλικών καλλιτεχνών του αναστήματος των Picasso, Matisse και άλλων, καθώς και εκθέσεις με έργα γνωστών Ελλήνων καλλιτεχνών, όπως των Μπουζιάνη, Γαλάνη.
The museum showcases the works of the renowned sculptor, M. Tombros, originating from Andros. The Museum also has a fine collection of works of renowned Greek artists. The Greek collection, in particular, is constantly updated with newer inputs, while it has also been showcasing the works of renowned international artists.
Στο μουσείο εκτίθενται τα έργα του διάσημου γλύπτη Μ. Τόμπρου, με καταγωγή από την Άνδρο. Το Μουσείο διαθέτει επίσης μια εκλεκτή συλλογή έργων γνωστών Ελλήνων καλλιτεχνών. Ειδικότερα, η ελληνική συλλογή ανανεώνεται συνεχώς με νεότερες εισροές, ενώ προβάλλει και έργα καταξιωμένων διεθνών καλλιτεχνών.
A charming museum next to the sea. From its roof you can enjoy a wonderful view of the sea with the lighthouse in the background and the small chapel, which was built with the generous donation of the famous Vasilis & Eliza Goulandris family foundation.

The Garden of the New Wing of the Museum of Contemporary Art, with an unhindered view of the Aegean, looks towards the picturesque beach of Nimborio, the Andros Yacht Club and the chapel of Agia Thalassini.

The Museum the years has established a close working relationship with the renowned National Gallery of Athens so as to provide an unmatched art exhibition platform on the island of Andros.

The harmonious architectural integration of the building with its surroundings attained a distinction in an international competition in Osaka, Japan in 1990.
Τον Ιούλιο του 1986, απέναντι από το υφιστάμενο κτίριο, άνοιξε η νέα πτέρυγα τεσσάρων επιπέδων. Η αρχιτεκτονική αρμονική ενσωμάτωση του κτιρίου με τον περιβάλλοντα χώρο βραβεύεται σε διεθνή διαγωνισμό στην Οσάκα της Ιαπωνίας το 1990.

The Museum of Contemporary Art of the Basil & Elise Goulandris Foundation, the first Contemporary Art Museum in Greece, was inaugurated on July 28, 1979 in Chora Andros, birthplace of the founder Basil P. Goulandris.
Το Μουσείο Σύγχρονης Τέχνης του Ιδρύματος Βασίλη & Ελίζας Γουλανδρή εγκαινιάστηκε στις 28 Ιουλίου 1979 στην Χώρα της Άνδρου, γενέτειρα του ιδρυτή Βασίλη Π. Γουλανδρή, και αποτελεί το πρώτο Μουσείο Σύγχρονης Τέχνης στην Ελλάδα.
The wish of its founders was the creation of a small Museum of Contemporary Art, equipped with the most modern museum specifications in order to be able to hold internationally acclaimed exhibitions.
Επιθυμία των ιδρυτών ήταν η δημιουργία ενός μικρού Μουσείου Σύγχρονης Τέχνης, εξοπλισμένου με τις πιο σύγχρονες μουσειακές προδιαγραφές, προκειμένου να πληροί όλες τις προϋποθέσεις διοργάνωσης διεθνών εκθέσεων.
The initial core of works was gradually enriched with works from the private collection of Basil and Elise Goulandris, while the positive reverberations from this effort and the increasing numbers of visitors and interest from audiences led the Museum to a further expansion.
Ο αρχικός πυρήνας έργων σταδιακά εμπλουτίζονταν με έργα της προσωπικής συλλογής του ζεύγους Βασίλη και Ελίζας Γουλανδρή, ενώ η θετική απήχηση αυτής της προσπάθειας και η αυξανόμενη προσέλευση και το ενδιαφέρον του κοινού ώθησαν το Μουσείο προς μια νέα επέκταση.
The increasing attendance of the Athenian public and the inhabitants of Andros, as well as the positive reception of this effort, led to the expansion of the museum to a new building. This new building, situated opposite the old wing was inaugurated on the 20th of July 1986.
Η αυξανόμενη προσέλευση του αθηναϊκού κοινού και των κατοίκων της Άνδρου, καθώς και η θετική υποδοχή αυτής της προσπάθειας, οδήγησαν στην επέκταση του μουσείου σε νέο κτίριο. Αυτό το νέο κτίριο, βρίσκεται απέναντι από την παλιά πτέρυγα. Εγκαινιάστηκε στις 20 Ιουλίου 1986.
Between 1983-1985 there are painting exhibitions of Greek painters of the 19th century and later. The big success makes evident that the space is not enough.

The new of the Museum of Contemporary Art includes a library, shop, projection room and has adequate facilities for exhibitions of international standards.
Η νέα πτέρυγα του Μουσείου Σύγχρονης Τέχνης περιλαμβάνει βιβλιοθήκη, κατάστημα, αίθουσα προβολών και διαθέτει επαρκείς εγκαταστάσεις για εκθέσεις διεθνών προδιαγραφών.To attract the attention of the Greek art connoisseurs, pieces of work by well-known Greek artists have been on display at the museum.
Για να τραβήξουν την προσοχή των Ελλήνων εικαστικών, έργα γνωστών καλλιτεχνών έχουν εκτεθεί στο μουσείο.
Over the following years came internationally commended exhibitions of works by artists who had left their mark on the 19th and 20th centuries including Matisse, Kandinsky, Rodin, Picasso and others.
Τα επόμενα χρόνια θα ακολουθήσουν σημαντικότατες περιοδικές εκθέσεις με έργα καλλιτεχνών που σημάδεψαν τον 19ο και τον 20ό αιώνα, όπως Matisse, Kandinsky, Rodin, Picasso κ.ά.
The Foundation's permanent collection includes more than 300 works by Greek and international artists. Part of this collection is exhibited on a rotational basis during most of the year.

What established the museum and Andros in Greece and abroad, are the art exhibitions of very important artists of the 20th century, organized every summer from 1986 till to date. Works of artists like Paniaras, Picasso, Matisse, Karagatsi, Kadinsky, Bouzianis, Balthus, Galanis, Giacometti, Κlee, Chagall, De Chirico, Rodin, Joan Miró, Georges Braque have been hosted by the museum, as well as an exhibition of the British art of the sixties.
Αυτό που καθιέρωσε το μουσείο και την Άνδρο στην Ελλάδα και στο εξωτερικό είναι οι εικαστικές εκθέσεις πολύ σημαντικών καλλιτεχνών του 20ου αιώνα, που διοργανώνονται κάθε καλοκαίρι από το 1986 μέχρι σήμερα. Every summer since 1986, the museum has been organising temporary exhibitions showing works of major artists of our century.

The Museum of modern art houses one of the best collections of paintings in the world, with a mixture of permanent and seasonal exhibitions. There was also a really nice atmosphere there on the day, with a very diverse crowd and none of the stuffiness you can find and certain art galleries and museums.

The main objective of the museum is to continue to promote Greek and international modern and contemporary art, while seeking to contribute to the current debates on the visual arts as a whole.

The Museum’s library holds more than 5,000 books and also operates as a reading room during the opening hours of the Museum.

The main aim of the Museum is to continue to offer its own creative contribution to contemporary artistic concerns and, within the framework of international artistic activities and aesthetic edification, contribute to the promotion of both Greek and international modern and contemporary art.
